Broken float hinge tab

#1 Post by TheLastOne » Sun Dec 14, 2014 3:59 pm

My first time in the carbs and the float hinge tab broke...alright, I broke it. :smt022

I tried JB weld and the fuel ate right through it. Then I tried soldering, first with the soldering iron and then with a butane torch, and neither would heat the tab enough to melt the solder. I'm very new to soldering so I may be doing something wrong.

Any advice on ways to fix it?

I used Epoxy glue to my fuel traps in my Porsche 911 carburators. It worked during those five years I had the car but there was no ethanol in the swedish fuel.

Time for a new carb body I think, the repair wont line up well and will be weak, replacement wont cost the earth.

For the sake of science I'm gong to try Permatex fuel tank repair to see how it stands up. I'm pretty sure it's the ethanol in the fuel that destroyed the JB Weld so quickly. I think I've decided to move away from ethanol fuels to the extent I can without too much trouble- if it melts JB Weld I imagine it must be also slowly working against the seals and other soft parts.

Everyone is right. The Permatex disintegrated completely, which is very disappointing, given that it is supposed to be designed FOR GAS TANKS.

An expensive learning experience, I suppose. Anyone got an extra they want to get rid of? It's the 1989 Canadian model.

The only option of revival, is an amazing welder. with a copper pin the same as the stock pin. Damned near impossible.
