Sorting the Canadian RZ

#1 Post by 75RD350rider » Sun Oct 23, 2022 10:35 am

I got the bike running a couple days ago. Took the carbs apart and they were very clean inside but cleaned them anyway. All stock jetting 22.5 pilots and 240 mains with DG chambers. It had the stock airbox with no filter. For now I will be running uni pods. Running it up on the lift with no filters it will not idle unless the enrichener is on. Aircrew set at 1.5. Bogs if you try and rev it up and will not fall back to idle. If you pull the enrichrner it runs perfect. So I am thinking I need to go up on the pilot jets. I am not interested in running the factory air box and can't now anyway as I cut the battery box off of it to install a battery. This bike has been setting 4 or 5 years. I have no experience with the 26MM stock Canadian variety carbs. I will likely put TM32s on in the future just trying to make sure the motor is OK before I put more money in this bike. Everything works electrical wise except the temperature gauge so I will swap in the instrument cluster I took off my white RZ when I put the Koso on it so I can tell where the temperature is at. I have only run it for 5 minutes or so at a time no gas tank using a auxiliary fuel tank hanging on my paint stand. I have the vacuum port for the petcock plugged as well. I am thinking 25 pilots is my next step?

I don't know about the Canadian carbs but jetting on the USA RZ350 without an airbox requires a much larger main jet. The Toomey kit came with #420 mains and I think stock was in the mid-200 range.

I agree. The off idle stumble and idle issues are what I am trying to sort now. It will be months before it is ready to test ride. I had 420s in the stock bridged EPA carbs on my white RZ before the VM 30s. These are the separate VM 26s that came on RZs in 84 for other countries. I don't know anything about them ..

You will defo need larger jets all round. If you ride it without those you'll seize it.

FYI If you rear around on here you'll see lots of people saying that the original airbox is the best for these bikes.

I agree. It is months away from moving under it's own power. I have one brand new TM32 and will be ordering another one and a new set of intakes soon. Along with all the usual refurb stuff. Fork seals, brake pads, progressive springs, braided steel brake lines, tires etc...Another Koso or similar multifunction electronic instrument panel. I also have to clean the tank and seal it. This is just the initial run up on the lift. Thanks for the inputs.

We also found the oil pump was not moving at idle and had 0 Gap with the pump up on the cam. I took a shim out of a RD parts pump I had and now it is 6 thousandths on spec with what I have read from some of Arrow's posts on the UK forum. It is oiling well now.

Next I will be upping the jets pilots and mains and then swapping in my other instrument panel so I can verify the temperature. I have the bridged carbs still with the 420s and I have pilot jets up to#40.

I am doing some more reading and it seems the pilot jets for the 26s are a different OD than regular VM pilots? Supposedly John at Economy Cycle has them?

beware with jets that not everyone is talking about the same carbs as the USA stuff was different and not everyone gets that there are linked and non linked.

Also... no one has mentioned it but if this hasnt run for years then you should change out the crank seals, if they are old you'll kill the motor if they split.

Bridged or not bridged those VM26 carburetors ( I have both types) use different form factor pilot jets than the ones in your VM30's. Economy Cycle, JetRUs, Niche Cycle, or all sources for your jet procurements.

Jumping to 40 pilot jets is a huge jump but maybe this will give you your answer. It may be a bit extreme the other direction.

You definitely need to go up on your main jets with pods.

I just put bridged VM26 carbs with 2 in to 1 intake on the bike I'm working on at the moment. I am starting at 380 main jets and 22.5 pilot jets. It has not been started yet but it's not far off.

Keep us posted here if you would.

I figured it out and now I feel dumb. The hose connecting the two carbs for the enrichener circuit had a split in it I didn't see. Fired on 2nd kick. Idles and revs clean. Needs much bigger main jets before actual riding of course. I have 410s and 420s

Note to self:
On bikes that have been setting, change all the rubber hoses..

I also got the temperature gauge to work by disconnecting, cleaning and reconnecting the cannon plugs and wires to the instrument cluster.
