Thanks, guys.
Can't lie down. Have to sit straight up in a chair.
Chest is quite deformed on the left.
Pain still out of control after a week. Trying to tough it out, so I don't have to be an inpatient at the hospital.
Don't think I'll be riding for quite a while, but maybe I can get back to building reasonably soon.
I appreciate your support and encouragement a lot. My non-biker friends definitely don't understand.
Starting to order replacement parts. Hoping the custom parts are still available.

Started stripping off the crashed parts.

Still moving slow, but made some progress.

Bars took a hit, even with the handguards. Bars are slightly bent, anyway.

Image

Both mirrors are damaged, now. The machine shop hasn't wanted to make me another set. Will try again.

Image

Shifter tip got grinded. Already have the replacement.

Image

Front fender is toast.

Image

Half the titanium footpeg is gone.

Image

Enough for now. More damage to post tomorrow.

Trying to pull the front end, so I can install the billet triples.

Not sure how to proceed. May be best to purchase a new ignition switch.

Was going cut a slot in the safety bolts with a dremel, but they're recessed into the ignition. Can do it, but won't be easy. Bolts are locktited in, so would probably need an impact driver, as well.

I usually just treat those like they are a Phillips head that has been rounded...... drill the center and the screw-head cap falls away and lock slides right off the screw stems. If you plan to keep the triple tree then, after you take the lock off, use vise grips to grab the screw shafts and un-thread them.

Thanks for the advice.

Definitely had to remove the safety bolts because the gauge bracket was bolted in.

Image

Upper triple just hanging by wires, so strapped it up with a couple of tie-downs.

Image

Centerpunched and started drilling the heads off.
Bolts were really locked. Can barely twist them at all, even with a huge vice grip.

Normal hardware.

I have a home made steering bearing tool for installing onto the lower triple, but the diameter is too large for this bike.

Could have a piece machined up to fit, but would probably cost about the same as buying a cheap tool.

Ordered a Bikemaster tool. Hope it works.

Hi-temp Loctite is only good up to 350 degrees F. Regular stuff is only good up to around 200-250F.
Next time try heat, if you can.

Good idea using heat. Wish I had more experience. Worried about damaging the finish on the ignition.

Doing work. Better pics soon.

I knew it was too good to be true.

This is the OEM upper triple.

Image

This is the photo I saw before buying the triples. Can't see the mounts for the handlebar clamps.

Image

I (previously) posted a photo of the new triples, and you can see 4 holes for mounting the handlebar clamps. So, 2 mounting positions, no problem.

Didn't measure the hole centers.

Surprise. The new handlebar clamps and mounting holes are much narrower. The steering damper isn't going to fit.

Trying to design a fix, but may be too difficult with this upper triple.

Need to do something soon, so I can ride. And, I won't be riding without a steering damper.

One more hurdle Pete.

It's the surprises that make the end result worthwhile.

This pic shows that the GPR damper bracket/lower clamp is not centered on the OEM upper triple. Not sure why, but don't like it. This issue isn't a problem, but would be nice to center the new custom damper bracket/lower clamp on the new billet upper triple.

Image

This pic shows that the damper mounting holes are offset, not in-line with the center of the stem. The damper mounting holes are also offset to the bracket/lower clamp mounting holes. The bracket/lower clamp mounting holes are also offset to the stem center.

Image

Here's the problem. The space between the mounting holes on the new billet upper triple is 80mm (90mm hole centers). The damper body width is 76mm. The wall thickness (where the bolt goes through) of the new custom bracket/lower clamp wouldn't be more than 1mm on the damper side.

Can't make the base of the new custom bracket/lower triple wider than the new skinny billet bracket/lower clamp because of the shape of the new billet upper triple. A wider bracket will hang over on the sides.

I don't want to raise the damper at all. Needs to be in the same position as now.

Seems sketchy to me, with these tight tolerances, but might be possible. I'm doing my best to get some good measurements, and will try to make some hand drawings. Beyond that, I definitely need help.

Got some measurements from the old damper bracket, and the new billet upper triple.

Got started. New billet damper bracket starting to take shape.
