New Members RD500LC

#1 Post by Palomoto » Sat Sep 26, 2009 3:50 pm

Though new to me, this bike had been introduced previously by forum member "oldguy". He made a great find with this bike, did most of the hard work, and left me with a pretty easy finish. When I bought it late June, 2009, my goal was to keep it looking as original as possible. There were various fasteners, plastic bits, and brackets that needed replacing and/or installing. The biggest work was in the cosmetics as the bike had been layed down years ago on it's right side and the center cowling, mirror, turn signal, and lower right pipe were rashed. Under closer inspection, every body panel had a scuff or scratch and decal condition was such that it would never be completely correct as is. I kept what original paint I could, bought a complete set of decals from RDDecals, and had the various panels resprayed and/or decals replaced as necessary and then all the panels were clearcoated. Hope you enjoy the nearly finished product.

That black cat below follows me everywhere! You'll see it in another pic...

The lower right pipe was "leaded" over the rashed area and then shaped to reasonably resemble the original contours. Not perfect but lower right pipes in good shape are a little hard to find.

Replaced rear turn signal and mirror and another angle of repaired body panels.

Image

Tidied up rear with a little polish and replaced tail light.

Red paint and tank decals were saved. Black paint on tank resprayed due to what looked like bird dropping damaged finish that could not be buffed out.

Plan to participate in the forum and thanks for the encouragement thus far.

Well, I knew it would just be be a matter of time before you joined up here.
To date, the end product look's fantastic!

Your guy did a great job on repair/paint of the panels! She look's almost new from the factory.

I'm sick now  , no really, great finish to a well restored bike!

Well, you did do all the heavy lifting on this one Dave. I just had the pleasure of finishing it off. The bodyman that did the work is top notch and the bike deserved nothing less. As we discussed earlier, he knows enough when to quit too and we subbed out the decal application to a pro so that this part of the job would go right too.

By hte way, got a response back from the original owner who said he thought he did have a box with the passenger footpegs and would mail them when he found said box!

Chip, don't hold your breath. He had told me the same response several times.

The mistery box indeed!

Looks great, a credit to the both of you.
Am I mistaken or is it rare to see RD decals rather than the RZ in the states? Just curious

What rzatch said.

I'm new to all this, but my understanding is that the red/black paint scheme RD500LC as well as any RD500LC was only available in Europe. The original owner told me he was "in the industry" and was able to get this bike into the states and registered in CA with it's country of origin being Holland. So, I don't expect I'll be seeing many of these in the states. Oldguy probably knows something about this as he purchased it from the original owner.
