Only been on the TIG about 5 times. Last class was just an O/A class. Instructor was cool to let me jump on the TIG.

Making some progress.

Good to see.!

That's going to be fun times

I'm getting ready to buy a 13,000 watt gas /propane generator to power up my welders nothing fancy a old rusted used Hobart 140. And a Crude GF 170 220 mig for the heavy stuff ( My house) has a 50 amp panel..yep that's it, and Edison would have to step in and get involved and it adds 3.5 k to a already 2k panel upgrade , just to get 220 wall power here...No thanks.
I have 4 projects that require fabrication. 2 vehicles and two motorcycles..one being the RZ.
Peoples cost and their services is just gotten WAY WAY outta hand, so I made up my mind either do it myself or I'm getting rid of 3 outta the 4 .

I have no interest in spending many thousands of dollars paying somebody to modify very basic stuff.

I had one joker in L.A. quote me $180 an hour labor......and another L.A. based motorcycle shop wanted $1,400 to do my carbs to my specs on my VFR750...L.A. hipster / classic revisionists can suck it!..
It's a fuckin Yamaha not a Bimota...lol

I have made a friend who welded professionally for 16 years before he left the industry, he's quite talented and also a solid machinist and a hardcore motorcycle enthusiast and he's going to help me out, as we share a mutual beleif that it's certainly not rocket science, nor should it cost as much.

Like your bikes...Whenever it gets done it gets done ...it's been too long. It certainly be will one day put a smile on my face when it's there..... Along with my gray hair...lol

Keep up the fun stuff👍

Good news is, there's a large sheet of .125" 6061 at school. Instructor said it's been there for 3 years, and I can probably use it. So, I'm getting back to work on the custom fuel tank for this bike, right away.

Yikes, hardly any posts to read on this website for a while.

Good news to report. Yellow and Black RZ is helping out by changing my hand drawings into CAD, for the fuel tank. Thanks, much!!

Welding lab starts up in a couple of weeks, and I'll see about getting the first pieces cut and tacked.

Wasn't able to get help with fabricating a custom fuel tank. Also haven't had the patience, or time, to learn the CAD program I bought. Not giving up on CAD, though.

Just using some warped scrap aluminum to mock things up. If I can get the design finished and fit, I would be happy to pay a real metal fabricator to cut and weld a nice one.

Cutting and shaping the aluminum by hand. Tried to flatten it out the best I could. Working on the bottom of the tank, first. Using .125" 6061 because that's all I had.

Started with this part that drops down between the frame rails. Having difficulty making the small end cap.

Image

Image

Made a small jig to hold the part level with the frame tubes. Used super glue instead of welding, to prevent warping.

I think the piece taped under the seat is okay. The rectangle piece connecting it to the end cap, and the end cap, itself, are difficult because of the angles. When I get those cut right and tacked in, I'll move on to the sides of the tank.

Use .070" 3032 aluminum. Heat with a acetylene torch using the soot method until the metal loses it temper. Make a mockup tank to be used as a buck to work the aluminum. Hand form the pieces and then weld them together. That is the basic way to do it. There are videos you can order showing the complete process. There is Byron in Canada. Price on an RZ tank is about $1400.00, but he already has all the bucks and templates. Might be easier to do fiberglass. Foam mold is far easier to do.

Great to hear from you. Thanks for taking the time to break it down. Would be happy to pay $1,400 for what I want.

The shape of this tank is uncommon on a motorcycle. There's no shaping of metal. No curves. Flat pieces and straight lines. Think origami. I want the welds to show. Would prefer clean, bare aluminum with clear coat.

No idea if I can get it done, but it's fun to try.
