DG pipes for RZ on an LC

#1 Post by RC30Tech » Tue Jul 19, 2022 11:27 pm

I am recommissioning my LCs after a long layup. The chambers on the one bike looked terrible. I found a brand new set of DG chambers for an RZ while digging through the parts boxes and thought... why not?

Took me a couple days of cutting, tweaking, fabrication and Tig welding but I got them on. Happy to say they did eventually fit and I retained the center stand.

I took it for one spin for about 45 minutes and have no complaints about the powerband. Seems wider than the old pipes and putting around is easier. Still have a good rush on the top end.

I had to:
- Cut off both rear hangers and make new ones.
- Tweak the sidestand I made years ago to clear the old chambers. A little tweak in the hydraulic press did it. A stock stand would hit by a lot I think.
- cut the right header at the exhaust collar to angle the pipe down just a bit at the rear.
- add a tab to the center stand bracket on the left pipe for the rubber to register on.
- quick wet sanding and rattle can spray job with Tremclad flat back (not high temp! Lol)

I also installed a brand spanking new centerstand. The old one had been bastardized to fit the old chambers.

The chambers are so-so quality wise. Whoever drilled the rivet holes was a moron. They are usable but are made under a zero QA/QC philosophy. Paint job was laughable. Looks way better now.

I'm retired on an ever shrinking income so buying Lomas etc pipes was out of the question. Run what you brung!

Thanks.

I do everything myself. Welding, powder coating, plating, painting, fiberglass (all bodywork), polishing, sewing, porting, crank building, etc. The only thing I didn't do was bore the cylinder.

The other one I have is a bit nicer. Hagon shock, Factory Pipe Products chambers, Tarozzi rearsets, fiberglass tank with flip filler. That one is still in storage. Next year...

The DGs look great on the LC to my eyes! Nice work, it's a fine motorcycle.

I just added to the existing RZ stopper to extend it rearward. It was 95 degrees that day and welding gear was getting to me.

Here is a picture of my other LC. A few differences like FPP chambers, Tarozzi fork brace and rearsets, and a few other things.

This bike has bodywork (including fuel tank with flip filler) I made of FRP. The other bike has a standard steel tank with the rest FRP. Still have all the molds to remind me of the nightmare it was.

Wow! That must've been quite a journey making that fuel tank and the body parts.

I spy a nice Metmachex swingarms (on both bikes) and Tarozzi rear sets on the second bike.

You do very nice work :smt023

The swingarms are pretty nicely made. I had the decals reproduced. I think Metmachex is short for metsl machining experts. Long gone now I think. They were about $300/ea off ebay many years ago.

Metmachex is still there and there is a separate swingarm company now that broke off of the original company.
