What other frame are good to use for a custom RD/RZ engine to put with?

#1 Post by Phantom » Thu Feb 04, 2021 9:00 pm

So I'm planning on reviving back my old man RD/RZ 350 that was stocked for a decade on our garage well my plan is getting it hybrid build since planning on doing a hot swapped on the frame but the my main concern and problem is that finding a suitable donor bike is hard to where I'm located at and most folks suggesting me to get TZR/MITO/RS rolling frame and do some engine mountings to complete my hybrid project build.

my problem is that finding a donor TZR/MITO/RS bike in my country is rare as finding a needle on an haystack, now was searching on google and some RD/RZ groups on what other good/decent frame to get as an optional but got little to no answer on my inquires posted.

so aside from Cagiva Mito Evo 125, Aprilia RS 125/250 and TZR Belgrada/3MA what other good/decent frame that I can use aside from the most popular go to frame by many hybriders??

Welcome Phantom...

There weren't very many cool 250s brought into North America, so most people around here tend to graft on suspension to the RZ frame.
Having said that, my choice would be an Aprilia 250 frame...

YamaGamma. Put the RZ350 motor into an RG250. The little Gamma frame is ideal for the 350 lump. The easiest hybrid to build (a few dollars worth of aluminum need to make the mounts). Fantastic results. 350 pipes bolt right on. The Mk 3 RG250 would be my choice :smt003

A bit of trivia: The RG250 was the first aluminum framed bike to come out of Japan.

TZR 250 1KT/2MA
RGV250
And have a look at old 400's if available
ZXR400
FZR 400 (Note: only the SP/R have aluminum frames)

And if you really live in the middle of nowhere:
How about building a frame jig with the RD geometry, cut any big bike frame and re-weld the parts to a Franken-frame suitable for RD's.
Especially considering that you'll likely need to modify most of the above frames anyway.

I wonder if an early cbr900rr chassis would work, incredibly light, very strong, lots of room and very short wheelbase. The only variable might be countershaft height

Honda Bros/HawkGT/RC31/NT650 is a classic.

They are expensive in good condition, but quite common so finding a rolling chassis might be doable.

Wasting time on 2T forums since the dawn of the internet. RD350LC, TDR250, plated 300XCW. No four strokes.

Hey there.

I'm new on this forum group that's why my profile information are still (????) at the moment, currently staying here in Italy but originally from Philippines itself, RD itself I bought is located in Philippines for a steal price.

finding TZR frame would be ideal for me since there are some tzr up for grab problem is some of them may have crashed or need to be shipped out of place, that's why I've asked for any other optional chasis that can support the RD350 to get hot swap on.

My goal is to make my RD350 to look like a sporty look.

Finding a gamma frame that wasn't butched up for some other project look will quite be difficult to source out to where I live from.

cool I'll try to source and search up some rolling chasis frame you have suggested problem would be is finding it in worthy condition.

In Italy it should be fairly easy to get a cheap Cagiva Mito.
That frame was used, too, for RD projects.

Here is a different approach. The Yamaha frame may be heavier, but the box size will be smaller than the VJ21 frame.
