Fuse box got melty

#1 Post by kobra » Sun Sep 27, 2020 1:39 am

I was filling up my oil bottle and noticed a little melted hole in the fuse box lid. Opened it up and found the end of the headlight fuse completely burned (fuse itself was still intact). The main fuse also was barely held in there and pulled right out. All of the metal clips are weak and brittle.

Any creative fixes for this? Maybe conversion to blade type fuses?

I cut one out of some generic *onda a wrecker mate had with blade fuses and crimped in.

M-unit?

or just buy a replacment yamaha style one from ebay. stagger the joints and get the length right if you solder it in, which you should.

I had a helluva time finding something waterproof with a 20A rating. All the ones I found were 15A or had an open back. Maybe I was being picky since kpke's solution looks fine...

I also have an irrational vendetta against those plastic spade terminals. No reason why. :smt005

Anyway, here's another option.

Almost all of my fuse clips broke when I removed them from the holder. They were extremely brittle and crappy. I recommend everyone replace theirs immediately to avoid getting stranded.

First I marked the wires and cut them to the length of the shortest one.

Then I installed the appropriate seals and crimped on the terminals. These are standard Metri Pack 280 rated to 30A each.

They plug into this nice connector which also serves as a fuse holder with a clear cover. The whole setup is water and dust proof.

I just mounted on velcro for now. It works well enough.

The whole shebang can be found on https://cycleterminal.com/

I ordered part number 4CFP 16-18 and the terminals fit all wires.

I like it! Those terminals with the seals are great kit.

Thanks! I've used similar connectors before (called Weather Pack) but these are a little nicer. I've considered replacing the other bullet and molex connectors on the bike with them but that's a lot of work haha.

Really nice! I have four bikes with "my" solution.

The next one will have your solution.

Thanks for posting this update. :smt023

LoL - I'm doing the exact same project today after I opened up my fuse panel to find a couple of direct connections!

That's a smart solution Kobra - very clean. I looked all over for a small fuse block that would take the modern auto fuses. Wish I'd have seen your link.

I ended-up buying a cheap standard fuse block and removing the holders and epoxying (West G/Flex) into the old slots. I was going to rivet too but they seem pretty solid with just epoxy.

I do dread removing these old fuses! At least the lid fits back on.

That looks clean too! My first thought was to go that route, but figured might as well go to blade fuses. Also - my fuse box didn't look so great after it got a hole melted in the top.

I think your solution is just fine as well. Many ways to skin a cat here.
