A while ago I picked up a FZR front end that had been modified to fit the RZ head tube.
For reference, I pressed out the RD(?) stem from the FZR600 triple as well as the stem from the Bandit 400 triple I had lying around.

They are very similar in lengths and diameters except where the top triple fits around the stem. The hole is larger on the FZR.
It looks like they are a direct swap as far as bearing size and length. The only part needed is the collar on the Bandit stem so it fits the FZR upper tripple hole.

Here's a pic of them with the bottom land of the top races lined up:

The RD stem really had the hell beat out of it. (yes the RD's top nubbin is bent, no I didnt bend it)

Anyone have a pic or some dimensions of the RZ stem?

well I got the forks all mounted up today. I ended stacking 7-1mm spacers under the lower bearing. I also needed to use 2-1mm spacers above the top bearing so the tension nut didnt run out of threads. I guess I should have used 9 of the 1mm spacers under the bearing but I had already placed the lower bearing on the stem by that time. I had to stack an extra nut on top of the existing tension nut so the top clamp was at the right height so the top nut didnt run out of threads. I'll replace the extra nut with a spacer which I already found in my box of bits.

Im pretty happy with the result. Maybe the upside down forks are a little bit heavier but the length of the forks themselves is perfect. No need to have 3 inches of fork tubes sticking out above the top triple clamp.

None taken. Although I wouldnt call what I did an incorrect way of doing it. I'm taking some pride in getting this project complete on my own from my apartment with only minor hand tools.

With it done this way it only cost me about $10 in shims and a short spacer I found in a pile of parts. I decided if I wasnt able to do it my way I would send it out to you.

Saving money is always a good thing. I hope everything works prefectly
as you plan, if whoever something unexpected pops up and it's
something you think I could help with, let me know.

Keep an eye on it after shimming. Having the bearings in the middle of the shaft will put much greater bending stresses on the stem. If you keep the bearing tight to the lower tripple, it will be much stronger. Althought the stem may be strong enough that this may not be an issue. Also watch the bearing preload as the shims may settle.
When do we get to see some pics! :D

the lower bearing is only 7mm above the clamp which is this distance: ....... at 1024x768 on a 15" display (lol).

I agree, stacked shims could and probably will settle some. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the preload.
