FYI Airtech is " out of Business"

#1 Post by Questo vecchio rz » Mon Feb 26, 2024 2:57 am

That's a lot of people on this forum and the 500 have used Air tech body work for decades they are out of business and they are no longer taking orders for manufacture.
This is kind of a big blow for vintage motorcycles as they are the only company in the world that makes such a vast array for so many different bikes. Rumor has said looking for a buyer hopefully that's true but I'm pretty involved in the motorcycle industry and I haven't heard of any inkling of this until it happened.

I have bought several pieces from these guys: https://skidmarx.co.uk/bodywork

Really nice high quality finished in gelcoat, ready to paint. Think they have a rep in Florida who will bring it in for you.

I bought a set for an RG250 and the quality is top notch. Looks great, fits nicely, and is very well made. Not at all like AirTech.

The quality went really downhill. I bought a belly pan for an RG back in 1995 and it was quite nice. Finished in the correct blue, just drill the holes and mount it. The last tail I bought for a race bike about 2015 was dog rough, no gel coat and had a huge depression in the top of the hump. Sanding off the cheap white primer finish I discovered lots of filler, pinholes etc. Took ages to fill/sand and prep for paint, probably spent 8 hours on it. Should have sent it back but not worth it with the cost of shipping bodywork being so high. When you sell crap people stop buying.

In contrast Skidmarx bodywork is beautifully finished in Gel coat and comes pre-drilled and they fit! As John says "top notch".

Quality slipping and going downhill will do it for sure! Hate to read this about a business catering to our bikes..

For Canadians looking to buy from Skidmarx in the UK the shipping may be quite expensive. I contacted Skidmarx for my RG250 set, who then told me they didn't ship to Canada. They said I would have to buy from their US distributer in Florida, USA. I looked into that and the way it would have worked was Skidmarx would send it to their Florida distributer, and then that Florida distributer would send it to me in Canada. The costs mounted up very quickly, and unfortunately I don't recall the exact cost, but it was significant. I was basically paying the shipping to Florida and then the shipping to Canada. I got around this buy buying it from Ian Wright at Classic Race Replicas (NS400R guru based in the UK) I knew about Ian and CRR from my own NS400R work. Ian got the kit from Skidmarx and shipped it direct to me in Canada. Again, I don't recall the cost savings, but it was several hundred $$$ dollars. If the situation remains the same and Skidmarx will not ship to Canada and your only option is the Florida distributor at a much higher cost, I would encourage Canadians wanting bodywork from Skidmarx to look into the possibility of Ian at CRR getting it for you, assuming he is still willing to do that. I will say that CRR has never disappointed me and Ian has gone out of his way to help me several times.

Rory had gone down there and helped out with getting the F2 bodywork sorted out. He bought a number of sets and may still have some. No further affiliation i'm aware of.

The airtech glass was fine provided you were willing to do a real good once over, grind out cracks and clean up little issues. I would call it race glass but it was heavy, mostly glass mat old technology stuff. Then again, when there's no other alternatives they were nice to have.

These guys sell a bunch of stuff though i've not bought direct from them. No RZ stuff last I checked.

Tyga is another excellent alternative provider, still not the most recent glass technology but its nice stuff. Minimal finishing, lighter and better materials. Again, not sure if anything RZ related.
