YPVS Servo Internals

#1 Post by RD4ME » Sat Apr 16, 2022 9:08 pm

Hi all,

This post is RZ related - but my issue is related to my 1989 DT200R which has a YPVS servo that does nothing!! No movement when tested off a 12v - but power is getting through to the Servo motors.

I'm pretty sure I have an old RZ YPVS Servo. I was wondering if I would be able to switch the Servo motors from it to the DT200r YPVS? The DT has a 3 wire unit which has all the electronics inside the unit. Very hard to find. I'm not sure how many wires the RZ has or how the RZ unit operates - but in earlier models the electronics were in a separate box. (At least that's what I hear!)

If anyone has any thoughts please let me know. Here's a few pics of the DT unit for reference.
Thanks.

I believe the early R1 exhaust servo can be used. Maybe someone on here has more info on it. Do a search on here. It’s been done

Easy stuff.
If the original unit has the controller onboard, you'll need a Zeeltronic PPV / Ignitech STPS to control any other servo without integrated controller.
Other than that you can also use an ignition/PV all-in-one box like the Zeeltronic PDCI or the Ignitech DC CDI P2 (which is what I'd use as the price & installation effort is similar but you add a programmable advance curve)

On my bikes I used RGV250, Ducati Hypermotard and Kawasaki ZX10R servos to drive the YPVS or other stuff to be rotated upon rpm & TPS.

All servos work the same way. There's a DC motor that has +/- cables (if inverted, rotation is inverted). Then you have a potentiometer with 3 cables: one at each end and one at the slider.
So with a bit of measurement you can easily identify which of the 5 cables is which and adapt it to the controller.
Usually theres some minor try & error involved to find the exact wiring when servo is not moving like expected (i.e. shooting off to upper / lower max position). In that case you either need to invert the motor +/- or the outer cables of the position potentiometer.

OK - thanks for the info MK.

That's definitely a little more complicated than switching the servo and pot. I think I'll keep looking for a replacement 3 wire for now.

Cheers.

As far as I know the TDR125/TZR125 have the integrated controller, too.
They may fit electrically, but at the risk of different actuation rpms.
That's why I always recommend a fully programmable unit.
