Hard starting RZ350

#1 Post by paul@tri-kon.ca » Thu Feb 24, 2022 4:49 pm

I have a 1989 RZ350 with 6800km. last winter did a full carb rebuild on both with new plugs and ran great early season. as summer went on got harder to start cold. when it does start chain side exhaust does not exhausting the same pressure for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then both cylinders are firing fine. I did a compression check and both come in at 115psi. What else should I check ?

I'll put my eggs in the usual basket labeled "left and right floatbowl exchanged".
Common mistake for people not being aware of the choke jet being solely in the left bowl.

The carb has an about 3mm diameter passage down to the bottom.
The right side has a jet and a small hole at the bottom.
The left only has the passage, but no connection to fuel (i.e. no additional hole).

Check your coil and spark plug wiring too for positive connectivity.

If it ran great for a few months and then started running bad, I don't think it's your float bowls being reversed?

But sometimes.. Ya Neva know. May as well check it.

I'd give it a complete carb clean...every detail. And a fresh set of plugs.

Then I'd check all the electrical system components for all parameters.

To everyone thankyou and will check everything. The only variable I forgot to mention, After 1 month of cleaning the carbs I put the Kream coat in the gas tank, could that of done anything to the carbs (ie left over residue)

TBH, Kream is just useless, It more than likely peeled off or bits of it into the carbs, Strip the carbs and clean them again,.

I was going to say pilot jets but also blow through choke cct. Bikes really don't like starting without a working choke cct.

You need to get that Kreem stripped out of your fuel tank and re-do with either Caswell or POR-15. Kreem is nasty stuff and time has passed it by….
