FZR600 Gauges on 85+ RZ350?

#1 Post by RD4ME » Thu Jan 07, 2021 1:49 pm

Curious if anyone would know which parts would work if hooked up to my RZ?

I'm missing the speedo and indicator light box from my RZ and was thinking it might just be easier to adapt an FZR600 cluster. They seem to be pretty cheap and quite plentiful compared to RZ gauges but whenever it seems too good to be true.....

Thanks.

I ended up with a set of what seem to be restorable fz750 gauges.
They were cheap.

Of course after I received them I remembered I'm not using a cable style speedo drive. Doh.
I ordered up a few GM/Ford gauge stepper motors I'll graft into the speedo.

These are from 1985-1988 and they do not have a cable drive style tachometer. You'll need to wire up that up on most gauges on 4 strokes from that era.

I believe most of the info needed to do that is here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1289

More than likely will use an Arduino. and yes, there are a few how to's on the net. One guy had a preprinted circuit board for doing exactly this but doesn't seem to be available anymore.
I've taken the gauges apart and bent the main bracket back where the are supposed to be. So far the hard part has been getting the bezel off to get at the guts of the speedo without destroying anything.

Had to bend up the bezel which is bent over the plastic gauge housing. Felt like I was opening a can of tuna without cutting it. haha.
Once I have the stepper motors I'll gut the speedo and make a bracket to hold it in place.
Programming shouldn't be too hard.. as I jinx myself.

Happy with how well this set cleaned up. They were pretty ugly when I received them.

Not sure why I'm so surprised how alike the RZ350 speedo is to the FZ750. I mean they are Yamaha of the same era.
Only difference seems to be the gauge face diameter. The RZ gauge can fit in the FZ750 housing, though.

Sorry for stomping all over your thread RD4ME.

I'll make my own and transfer this stuff over there.

Sorry to disappoint, but it isn't a straight or easy swap.

#1. The speedometer is geared for a different sized front wheel so you'll have problems immediately.

#2. The tachometer is for a 4 stroke and will read 50% low on a 2 stroke and you'll have problems immediately.

You can use the FZR clock housing. Put 350 gauges in them. Of course, then you need to figure out how to mount it.

If you want something with that look, turn your attention to TZR250 clocks or RD350YPVS N1 or N2 clocks.

I've been building and restoring and selling Yamaha gauges and sets for years

Well I did have a sense that it wouldn't be plug and play. Thanks Silverstrom for the explanation.

I do like the look of both the FZ750 and FZR gauges. Although now that I look more closely at the FZR housing it seems like they have the molded plastic back - so not sure if I could transplant my tach and temp as can be done on the RZ & FZ750. Not sure if these can be accessed and switched from the front side.

Might be fun to try and even an incorrectly calibrated speedo would be more precise than my current setup...

This set up works well. All 100% Yamaha.

I should have lots of 350 clocks here if you get stuck or need advice. PM me if needed.

The speedometers themselves are the same.
Driving the RZ350 and FZ750 gauge at the same RPM (apologies for the video shake).
