Repaint costs

#1 Post by kobra » Thu Sep 17, 2020 11:55 pm

Hi guys,
Just wanted to get your take on repaint costs.

My RZ is overall not bad, but the tank really needs to be done. If I do the tank, I thought I should also do the other plastics so they match. I bought a complete decal kit from RDDecals.

Has anyone had their bikes repainted recently? What should I expect to pay?

I got 1 quote and it was a bit higher than I expected. The guy is a pro, and guarantees perfection, but still it shocked me a lil bit.

Thanks!

I paid $1300 each for mY RZ and LC350s beautiful work. A lot of cracks repaired and all dents pulled.
He is finishing up a complete paint job on my YSR50 for $900. Again, fixed all cracks and pulled the dents etc.

Oh perfect... mind letting me know who did the work? Is he local?

That's incredible cheap even for a single tone paint job.

I just had my RZ350 done last winter. 1100.00
for whole bike and the guy said he probably wouldn’t do one that cheap again. Great job

The quote I got was $2500. Guy has a great reputation and guarantees his work will be perfect. But still... it was a bit of a shocker to me. Not sure what I really expected, maybe more like $1200-1500.

Just trying to do my due diligence and understand what is typical.

Is he doing repair work, or just the paint?

As a reference, I was quoted about $500 for the upper cowl alone by a well known CA RZ place. Color matching the yellow to any other body part that I care to ship.

A crack in each side panel (to be plastic welded), and some switch control dents on one side of the tank to be pulled out. Both are included in the price.

Those repairs are small, but eat up shop hours and it doesn't take long for the bill to get expensive. Still, $2500 US is a lot for the little bit of paint there is on the bike.

Yeah, I definitely get that. After rebuilding my bike from the ground up I have a real understanding for the work. I always ask myself "how much would I charge to do it?". I probably wouldn't touch it for less than $2k.

Then again, that's all he does day in and day out, and has the tools and work space. I imagine he makes quick work of the plastics since they're so small and easy to work with. The tank might take more finessing with the dents and the potential for oily gas.

One thing I forgot to mention is I already bought decals, so add $150 to the total cost.

Anyway, no disrespect to any painters out there, just trying to understand the market :smt003

small parts are more difficult to work with, every thing requires an extra hand to hold it. many parts have to be hand sanded which takes longer. some body shops would rather not do bike as production shops are set up for cars. at the end of the day its all about making a living.
