TY trials fans?

#1 Post by nokturnal » Sat Mar 21, 2020 12:21 pm

Noticed some interest in my trials bike... which I don’t do trials on. Thought I would start a thread.

This is mine. Bought it to learn some skills without killing myself (see background)

Anyone else have one?

What year is your TY, and is that the original rear fender? Looks different than I remember, but mine's been gone 25 years now. You will be the wheelie king!

It’s a 76. Paint is not original. Rear fenders are aftermarket I believe.

I think I still have oem piston and rings for that machine if you ever need some! Very nice bike. I had a 1979 or 80 IT 125 back in the day!

I have an old Fantic K-Roo, which is a hoot. I've never done a trials, either, but I ride it around on my own property hopping logs and trying to do trials-like stuff on it. I get a helluva workout in a short time riding the thing!
Used to have a Montesa Cota 315 and I sure wish I kept that one!

I restored a 74/5 (cant remember) for AHRMA trials several years ago. I was racing post vintage on Sunday & decided to do trials on Saturday. Then AHRMA gave trials their own stand alone events the next year. Suffice to say I have not rode, or competed, ever. But I do have a bike!

I liked the look of the European machines & painted mine to match, more or less. It sits in my house awaiting flogging.

I used to have a GasGas TXT249,,, I also just rode it round my garden to pick up slow speed skills for off road to help with my rally skills.

I did once help a friend try and start a TY250... he decided it was a good idea to drag it around the local roads behind his van on a tow rope with me about 6ft behind the van dropping the clutch. hmm... all i could see was the back doors of the van and all i could hear was bike not starting and all i could breathe was the vans exhaust. The vagaries of youth... How am I still alive lol.

Several years ago, when I still had my Montesa, I took a class taught by a former British trials champion, and darned if I can recall his name. I realized pretty quickly that there was something wrong with my bike, as his bike could do all kinds of magical riding stuff and mine could not. The guy stood on one side of his bike and rode circles with the bike almost parallel to the ground, and he made it fly from rock to rock. He was a nice guy, too, and barely laughed at all at my efforts.

Saw a guy a couple of years ago at the Barber Vintage Fest in Alabama do some amazing trials exhibition on a vintage TY175. He started his show on a modern Beta but got on the old iron at the end. This included some rail stuff, climbing on a motor home and jumping from it to an old car. There was also an enlisted Army infantry guy from Ft. Benning GA doing some amazing things on that same course on a bicycle!
