Saw the leverage Joh obtained with the socket and decided to build a bracket from loose odds n' ends and attach it to the handle bar. Removed the ring expecting the stopper to pop out under spring load - did not. Rocked the forks but plug did not move out (?). It appears I will have to dissassemble the whole fork to change the oil - hoped otherwise.

I was thinking pulling out the cap was not wise, on my part, as the spring would rocket out of the stanchion and cause some damage personally or to my garage ceiling. Any thoughts Jon on replacing the wire clip with a snap ring?

Re-examined the groove in the stanchsion where the wire ring seats I note its rounded. Snap rings are square shouldered - yep, wouldn't work.

yes thats why im saying not to use a circlip. the fork was designed for the wire clip. they come out easily and are no problem, why change?

Find snap rings easier than the wire to remove as only one tool required. Did find wire rings with up turned ends however in Zhejiang. Time for a full removal and tap out the remaining cap. Cheers to all who offered direction.

I removed the seal, the dust cover and the wire clip fairly easily

To remove the top plug I just started to unwind it with socket and ratchet, after about 3 turns I dispensed with the socket and kept downward pressure on the plug and slowly unwound it by hand

I didn't seem to have any issue with it popping off

I did the reverse fitting heavier springs, by laying a spanner on some anti fatigue foam, putting my knee on the spanner so it wouldn't spin, putting the plug into the jaws of the spanner, compressing the spacer and spring onto the plug then down onto the thread turning the stanchion to get the thread started and safe, then finished the job with the spanner
