Don’t forget about Economy Cycle too for parts as John offers a 10% discount on most items. Discount code is RDTECH. He supplies great customer service and is a supporting member here.

While looking for caliper rebuild parts I'm finding that they specify UK version only for the 84-85 rz350. Were the US and UK brakes different?

FWIW I found the OEM seal-only kit while researching my brakes. The XV250 uses the same caliper but different mounting bracket. Turns out they use the same piston kit, but offer the seals separately. Not that you'd want them since Brakecrafters is cheaper and includes a new bleeder etc.

Btw, if brake is dragging take the lever off and retry. If wrong or bad lever is used it can be pushing on the piston.
Brass brushes on a dremel are good for cleaning out caliper dust seal areas. Most aren't chromated sadly.

Good thought, also, people tend to take-up play with the adjusting screw to the point of brake drag.

I rebuilt the front calipers on my RZ with aftermarket (K&L?) seal kits maybe 8 years ago. Now both calipers are leaking fluid from the seals. I mention this because in the hundreds of calipers I've rebuilt for customers, I can't remember many (any) that were leaking. They were all just stuck because of the corrosion behind the seals, as brought up earlier here. Leaking fork oil can make the seals swell too.

The OE seals seem to last forever except for being mangled by the pressure from the corrosion in the grooves. Whichever aftermarket ones I used must have been of an inferior material. I'm going with the Yamaha XV250 ones, they are worth the money to me. If you keep the fluid fresh, the calipers keep working almost forever anyway. It's the old, moisture filled fluid that causes most of the problems.

Also, using a brake assembly grease is better than using brake fluid. You don't want brake fluid around the dust seal, which is exposed to the air and water. That will encourage corrosion buildup in that area. The assembly grease helps seal the seal area from outside air and water. Just make sure the grease you use is specifically for the pistons and seals, anything else will cause the seals to swell.

Interesting. Even the nastiest brakes I've ever seen were not leaking, just super corroded.

A little while back I did extensive research on the correct brake caliper lube and determined that silicone paste was suitable as brake seals are made from EPDM. I have now used it on multiple calipers with no issues. I put it on the seals, piston, a thin layer inside the piston, etc. and it keeps things from corroding. The one spot you don't want to lube (or at least be very light on) is the surface of the pressure seal, because it needs to grip the piston in order to pull it back into the caliper after you pull the lever.

You can buy a lifetime supply in a bottle. I use it on all plastic/rubber parts that need lubrication. However you don't want to use silicone grease on silicone o-rings :)

I wonder if silicone dielectric grease would be suitable. I have way more than a lifetime supply of that!

Research is in order!

I never needed to go hunting for special caliper grease since the Yamaha OEM kit comes with a cute little packet of pretty pink brake grease.

Also, thanks to kobra for the great find on the XV250 seal kit. Doubt if I would have found that on my own.

But... cute pink grease for the RZ? Probably better for use on the 250 Virago. :smt003

All this talk made me think of my underwhelming brakes now my project is back on track..
Rush of blood to the head and I hit buy on some Triumph 600 calipers. Known mod for RZs.

But different spacing from RGV forks I have. Bugger. Wrong Nissins. Oh well found some RF900 ones.
