transmission/clutch cover screws very stuck

#1 Post by Duece » Thu Sep 03, 2015 10:15 pm

the transmission cover screws are really stuck. i've been pounding away with an impact driver for 20 minutes on the 3 stuck screws. I was able to get the generator cover screws off with ease. but the rest of the screws for the entire trans over will not budge one single bit...

I put the generator cover back on to take any pressure that held down the stuck screws. getting pb blaster to go where i'd like it to be is a bit unlikely. however, i did spray it everywhere including my face.

Any ideas?.. i was really hoping installing the new powerdynamo generator was going to be alot easier than this. what was i thinking

i was thinking about having someone hold the 1/2 impact driver, use a sledgehammer, and be sure to get a running start kind of like billy madison style

all jokes aside i really need some input cause this is not a good way to begin my first real upgrade on this r5b

Soak with penetrating oil then heat using heat gun followed by manual impact driver. If that fails drill the heads off the screws, remove the cover and then use vice grip to remove stubs.

you think the penetrating oil will making it through the mated surfaces and into the threads? thatd be nice. I'm letting it soak all night and saying my prayers. good call on drilling the heads off i was thinking for whatever reason the cover still wouldn't come off. that'll be my plan B though, thanks

Heat will help, but the impact driver with a decent correct sized tip is what you need. The screws are JIS not Philips... and your philips screwdriver will ruin them, google that if you want to know more/why etc, its quite illuminating. Ive found with heat and a decent driver you can remove heads damaged by DPOs where you just knew they would be drilling next.

the jis tip on my 1/2 manual driver has worn down after 4 years of use so ill need to replace that first thing in the morning. I've got a good heating gun and i read somewhere that 212+ degrees is the magic number(dan's motorcycle repair guide?).. ill update with my results tomorrow

Patience is key. If you have to walk away do it. Saves a lot of money and headache in the long run.

Another option is heat followed by cold. The shock frees stuck fasteners.

For the cold you can use a can of compressed air, as sold for computer cleaning etc. If you invert the can and spray you get an extremely cold blast. By that I mean instant freezing, so watch your fingers or you'll be sorry. Trust me.

I'm sure shooting the hole side out the engine with pb blaster helped... but i went out this morning and bought a prefect fit Jis tip for my imdact driver and that seemed to really to the trick. no heat necessary. appreaciate the info guys!
