Re: Livermore pics
Thanks Mark!
The front wheel mounted motor thing I have two more photos of it, one shows the name. When I get a chance I'll take a look (or it will show up if I can find time to do a YouTube movie). It was an interesting vehicle.
Come on Paul, you cannot keep using that bag of Tee Shirts excuse.

Wow, I never noticed that, the engine is actually inside the spokes! Holy maintenance nightmare, must be a radial with the crankshaft as the axle.two-stroke-brit wrote:great pics as always , what is the scooter with the front wheel mounted motor ?

Here you go. Lots more info on the www.
From Wikipedia
The Megola was a German motorcycle produced between 1921 and 1925 in Munich. Like Bimota, the name is a portmanteau derived loosely from the names of its designers Meixner, Cockerell, and Landgraf.
The Megola had a unique design, laid down by Fritz Cockerell in 1920, using a rotary engine mounted within the front wheel. The engine contained five cylinders with side-mounted valves, each of which displaced 128cc, with a bore/stroke of 52x60mm, and a total displacement of 640 cc (39 cu in). The 5 cylinders rotated around the front axle at 6x the wheel speed; thus while the cylinders were at maximum of 3600rpm the front wheel was turning at 600rpm, or roughly 60 mph (given the wheel diameter). A hand-controlled butterfly valve was located in the hollow crankshaft to regulate throttle. Power output was a modest 14 bhp (10 kW) but was applied directly to the wheel. This arrangement produced a very low centre of gravity and provided for excellent handling.[1]
"The 5 cylinder star-engine was mounted in the front wheel, and the wheel turned around six times slower than the crankshaft did." [2]
The engine was very flexible, lacking both a clutch and a transmission. Starting it required a person to either spin the front wheel while the bike was on its stand, or to push-start. The cylinders could be disassembled without having to remove the wheel spokes in order to service the engine. The tires were tubed with the front inner-tube being a circular sausage shape rather than a complete doughnut-like torus shape, so that it could be changed without removing the wheel and engine. The box section frame contained the main fuel tank which fed by gravity a smaller tank mounted on the axle. The front suspension consisted of semi-elliptical springs.
The top speed was 85 km/h (52 mph) resulting in a win at the German Championship in 1924, while later, sportier models were said to be capable of 140 km/h (88 mph). A total of ~2000 Megolas were built, and perhaps only 10 rideable examples remain, and one was displayed at the Guggenheim Museum 'Art of the Motorcycle' exhibition in New York City, United States.

Great pics Ken!!
Those CBX hybrids are very tastefully done. And your bike is a show stopper all by itself!!
Did you happen to see my buddy Tom Stein with his RD 350? He was down there showing it too. Here's a pic of it from a couple years back.
Just ignore the homebuilt bike next to it.

Re: Livermore pics
Thanks Charlie! I did not see any RD350s. Several Daytonas and a couple RD400s but no 350s???
The CBX's were way cool as were a lot of the bikes there. He kept starting the red one, let it warm up a bit, then rev'd the pee out of it. Sounded great.

Then my new riding buddy and I went for a ride and there was this on Polameras Road.
It's gonna take a long time to fix these fucked up washed out land slided roads.
Took back roads out in to the country where I let my son have his first liter bike ride.
He was thrilled to say the least.

Re: Livermore pics
I posted the text below on BARF trying to get more info...
I was having a good time chasing a Ferrari and Porsche up Mines from Livermore today. Before we got to the right hand turn with the giant rock boulder on the right there was emergency vehicles and a helicopter landed a couple hundred yards back in an opening in the creek area. Moving along I could see a bike down and a couple more bikes/riders at that corner. Ambulance and 2 fire trucks were there. Maybe about 11:30 or 12 or so?
Anybody know the status???
Best wishes for the rider
When I came back a couple hours later the bike was parked in the gravel on the side of the road. I have a photo of the bike but not sure if I should post it??? A red Honda sportbike. Also it's a very gravelly corner.
Here are a few photos

Re: Livermore pics
The bike doesn't look to bad, more cosmetic damage than anything else. Which direction where they going? Unfortunately if the rider went over the edge and down the creek enbankment there are a lot of trees and other obstacles to hit. Hope he is ok.
I road out to junction a couple of weekends ago and there is, as always, spots where the road gravel piles up and is quite dangerous.
