Any motorcycle Mechanics on here ?

#1 Post by Headcoats » Fri Nov 17, 2017 6:59 am

Might have an issue with my 2002 Bonneville with the clutch basket

I can get movement as in the picture above with everything tightened up

Gear/basket has a needle bearing that sits on a sleeve then slides onto gearbox shaft

I know the needle bearings wobble in their cages but is this not good ?

Are you saying that it has end play? As in and out movement. If it does when completely assembled it's likely designed into the assembly to accommodate expansion as the unit heats up. If there's no discoloration on the sleeve or bearing rollers and it worked before disassembling I'd say it's OK. More details may help diagnosis. Like does it diminish when the hub plates and pressure plate are installed?

Hub plate and pressure plate fitted makes no difference

No discolouration

Tempted to splash out on a second hand complete clutch from a low mileage newer model

How much movement? 2-3MM or 10-12MM?

Unless it was being problematic before disassembly I'd inspect everything and if it passes forget about it.

OK I'm a Dork !

In getting the clutch centre nut off I have damaged the thrust plate with the 4 posts for the clutch springs attached to it

Well I thought, it's only a small part of the clutch and only a rough arsed casting, how much could that be ?

FFS £134 !!!!

So taking a slight twist here , I have seen a complete clutch basket assembly on the auction sites with only 3000 miles for £150 posted

Still a kick in the bollocks but what can I do ....

So this 3000 mile clutch comes with everything including the £134 part, clutch plates, basket etc

The most annoying part will be when it comes with 2-3mm of end play when properly assembled.......

Ah nothin's cheap anymore. A decent damn cigar costs $25 US. So spend away for it will become so worthless to have cash at this rate.
