Built 2 sidecar chassis and 1 solo back in the UK using SIF bronze welding rods which I think is whats used on the second photo. Note the difference in the heat affected zones between the discussed photos hence my assumption that first photo was brazing which we used to refer to as sweat joints which is like soldering with a brass based filler rod which is best suited for using a pipe /lug construction not a pipe/pipe as in photo 1.I ve used various welding methods in last 45 years and will admit there have been many changes in that time but not every type of welding suits every aplication.

BTW there are tens of thousands of of oven brazed motorcycle frames out there. All very old and still doing the job as intended.

And then there's Harris. My point is it's not a write off because it's not understood. It's a viable method of joining metal for motorcycle frames.

That's a beautiful example of the frame makers art. I agree that most old bikes were oven brazed but the joints were usually cast pieces which the frame tubes were socketed into then usually pinned to temporarily secure the joint then a slurry of brass and flux was painted on each joint before the assembly was put into an industrial oven for a couple of hours . Those brazed joints had a considerable shear area where a fitted tube joint (especially a baddly fitted one) have
a relatively smaller shear area and brass isn't very good in shear.
Not trying to be smart but dems de facts as I was taught them.

I don't care, I would clear powder coat that frame. It is F**king beautiful.

Sorry if I've caused some confusion. The Harris frame is not brazed it is bronze welded.Yes I agree it is a thing of beauty and also agree it would look good with just a clear coat on it. Due to relative low temp used to bronze weld hardly any of the Harris frame has blue heat halos around the welded areas, unlike frame at the top of this discussion which in my opinion is brazed.

TIG brazing is what we called that type of joining. 'Bout half the yield of mild steel but the fillet reinforces,is malleable and so adds to joint strength.

I haven't had access to tig equipment for a few years now and only had experience welding aluminum and stainless.My bronze welding experience was with oxy/acetylene some years ago. I can see how the tig equipment would be an ideal process with suitable filler rod.
