The second radiator did not fit. Bummer, i will have to find another solution for that little problem.

I started putting some stock bodywork on.

Just a little more on the radiators. See the photo below. The second one that doesn't fit also has the upper y tube coming off the radiator almost straight, no angle like the stocker and the first alu one. It is so close to the bracket for overflow bottle there is not enough space for the radiator hose to fit on to it. So it will need 2 repairs. I will move the locating pin on both of the alu radiators to get them to fit. :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013

After I think three attempts with the same result each time, I left it alone. The leak is extremely slow. It takes a few minutes to go from 6 psi to about 2 psi. I am relatively certain it is related to the plastic Vforce2 housing parts. Frankly I don't know how it could possibly be leaking with all new gaskets and using the gray stuff ( :smt017 the name escapes me at the moment). I have had people tell me don't worry about it and others will say it's the worst thing in the world. If it presents a problem when I start the engine, I will change out the reed valves. I think that most people don't pressure testing engines on reassembly, and I have this feeling that many of them probably have some leakage. Pure speculation though.

We shall see.

No leak is better than some leak. The idea behind a pressure test is to be sure the crank seals aren't pissing. When I was a kid running and looking after my bikes, over 30 of them, all 2 stroke, I didn't pressure test. My rebuilds lasted a long time. In fact, I never redid a top end on any one bike more than once. I rode my '81 LC for 9 years, over 100,000kms. It received a new top end at 50,000kms.

I haven't installed Vforce reeds but I have had them in my hands for a good look.
I don't like the 2 piece design. I am convinced that is what causes the leak on the older ones.
I would take the 2 pieces apart, put sealant on them, and put them together and let it dry.
Worth a thought anyway.

I have VF3's and reed spacers and the gasket is the hardest place to get rid of leaks. I always use Threebond on them but have never had to seal the reed cage parts together, but a sparing amount of sealant couldn't hurt. When you think of how long a pressure cycle is on the engine it is the gross leaks that will kill it, but completely leak free is good for piece of mind because a leak isn't going to decrease over time.

Some leaks may decrease over time as the engine heats up and gums up a little. Especially low volume.

A pressure leak is not necessarily a vacuum leak.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies on this leak issue.

Yes, this is my plan. :smt044

Maybe I will just pre-gum it up a bit, chuck a little grease and dirt on the intakes.

But seriously, there is a very slight pressure leak in this area.

Would the vacuum leak be the same as the pressure leak or could it be worse? :smt017

I am not educated enough to know the answer to this…does vacuum suck more than pressure blows? (This would be a good one for Aaron to reply to. Haven't heard much from him lately. :smt039 )

It seems like it would be the same, but I know that people say you should both pressure test and vacuum test these engines. So there must be some sort of difference. Maybe it has to do with the direction of the oil seals. They might seal one way and not the other??? [smilie=wacko.gif]

I will ask a couple of the smart people here at work. :smt045

Oh, and the never-ending radiator story. :smt010

On the radiator with the Y tube coming almost straight off, last night I stuck a deep socket with a breaker bar attached into the tubes and very gently coerced them into shape (mostly). All the while waiting for a wrinkle or a snap when one of the tubes broke or tore off. But as above I would say that I was "mostly" successful. Nothing broke or wrinkled and that part of the fitment is a little better. I will be able to get the hoses attached.

Now I have to get the aluminum welder guy to relocate the pins on both of them. One needs to move 2 directions and one just straight back.

So, more of this :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013

I think even after that, the bottom mounts with the grommets in them still are not going to line up perfectly. But I really can't tell until the pins are relocated and I can get these stupid things close to where they need to be without contacting the frame.

Have I said this about these radiators? :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013

Been there and done that! I move the pin on mine by 6mm (0.25") and all was well.

Rear sets installed with parts missing. I was hoping to get pipes on today but now out of time.
