Re: Low Budget Purple Project
To open the kit:
- Loosen the clamp holding the reservoir line, using a 5 mm Allen wrench
- Pull on the line until the end cap comes out of the reservoir.
- Tap on the reservoir until the bladder drops out.

If you’ve packed your Emergency Kit correctly, the bladder will have everything required to improve your day.

It’s not going to make you all warm, and dry, and comfortable,
But it might help you forget that you’re cold, and wet, and miserable

The above post was a Joke. My feeble attempt at humor.
I do not condone impaired driving, under any circumstances. It is never acceptable.
It is illegal, it is unsafe, it is selfish, and it is stupid.
DON’T DO IT.
Rant over, now back to the regularly scheduled program.

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
A few of you may be wondering why I spent all this time, effort, and money, just to add more weight to my bike.
When I first started building this bike, I was using a Works Performance shock with a remote reservoir,
so I built a pretty nice aluminum bracket to mount the remote reservoir to the RZ .
When I put the Ohlins shock on the bike, I removed the bracket because it looked silly just hanging there, doing nothing.
I installed the Works Performance shock on a different bike and then sold that bike, but I didn’t sell the bracket for the remote reservoir.
After all the effort that went into making that bracket, I wasn’t going to just give it away.

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
So, the truth of the matter is that I purposely misled everyone when I said that I had an Ohlins shock with a remote reservoir.
In reality, I made a Fake remote reservoir because I had a spare bracket that I really wanted to put on the bike.
A friend gave me the reservoir for free. (I think it’s off of a GSXR)
The braided steel line cost $7, the fitting that connects the line to the reservoir end cap cost $3, and the bracket that holds the line cost me $50.
To summarize this very long charade, I spent $60 Can. ($48 US) on my bike to add 1 or 2 pounds of totally useless polished aluminum,
which will require constant maintenace so that it remains shiny.
Hmm. When you say it like that, it sure doesn’t sound like a very smart thing to do.
Am I sorry I did it? Hell No. I think it looks pretty cool.

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
I just read this for the first time. I could have told you, way back there, that it was a storage container and not a reservoir. We talked about that one day in front of the shop. Why didn't you ask me Steve? I could have just told everyone instead of you beating around the bush for umpteen posts. Sheesh!

Oh, by the way, you didn't think you were fooling anyone, or pulling the wool over everyone's eyes, did you? Everyone knows that Yamaha didn't make a remote reservoir shock, so your remote line with the YAMAHA I D dingle, was a total fudge job, waste of time.
Also, By the way, just in case anyone did not fess up, that fricken YAMAHA remote reservoir shock, storage container for your emergency drug stash, looks really cool, and being waterproof, is really cool and unassuming as it blends right in with your chrome bling Slinger pipes, and it's a fake reservoir, man! That must have cost you a fortune and burned out a lot of brain cells. It looks real. You must be the happiest, modified RZ350+ owner. Good job hombre! Your forum delivery, was a bit winded.
Thanks for helping me pack to move. I did need to get away from you and I'm sure the feeling is mutual. Reading about your pursuit of the build, is much better from afar. Hope to see you soon. I could van down with the bike for a ride this summer. Peter? Evan?

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
Hey Rory.
You’re right, it was a long winded, drawn out series of posts. I could have said it all in 4 sentences
- I got a old remote reservoir for a rear shock and polished it up nice and shiny.
- Then I bought a fitting and a braided steel line, and made a clamp to secure the braided line.
- When I had all the parts, I attached the reservoir to the RZ, using a bracket that I already had.
- I ran the braided line from the reservoir down towards the shock, and secured the line using my new clamp.
And yes, we did talk about the fake reservoir at the shop.
I’m surprised you didn’t expose my fraud earlier.
You could have save everyone from hours of boredom if you’d have said something.
It’s unfortunate that I dragged it out so long. My bad.
But in my defense, I blame Winter. It refused to go away, and I was bored.
You really should come down for 2 Wheel Sunday.
I should have a spare RZ that you could borrow, if you don’t have yours up and running by then.

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
Now, onto something more serious. Not.
Ten months ago, on July 3, 2017, I made a post on page 83 of this thread and said the following:
But, I wanted to put an EGT gauge on it, and I wanted to get it painted, and I was a little bit afraid of blowing it up, so I never did start it up last year.
Over the Winter, I did get the bike painted
I made a fake remote reservoir.
I made a bracket and installed the EGT gauge.
Put the triple clamp, gauges, headlights, and clip-ons back on.
Tightened the forks and brakes.
Sanded a few rock chips out of the fork brace and then re-polished it, before installing it and the front fender.
I relocated the temperature gauge display and shift light.
Last week, I fixed the oil level sender.
Actually the sender was fine, but it had a 3 pin connector and my main wiring harness needed the sender with a 2 pin connector.
Found a dead sender with a 2 pin connector, cut it off and installed it on my good sender.
Tested it and it works like a charm. The bright red light on the instrument cluster comes on when the oil level gets low.
While I had my soldering iron all warmed up, I modified the circuit board that controls my LED temperature gauge.
I noticed that LED #9 on the display, (110*C), would faintly flicker on and off, when the coolant temperature reached 80*C (LED #6) and 90*C (LED #7).
I did some research and it appears that I’m getting an oscillation that’s being caused by 2 things.
- Excessively long wires between the LED display, and the main IC on the circuit board.
- High current draw though the IC when it’s powering 7 LED’s.
Some of the application notes suggested putting a capacitor across the LED supply voltage, if the LED’s are more than 6 inches away from the IC.
In my circuit, the LED’s are 3 feet away from the IC, so, I soldered in a capacitor.
I’ll find out if it works next time the temp gets to 80 or 90*C.
A couple of days ago, I put 2 coats of wax on the newly painted bodywork, and it looks spectacular.
Last night, I programmed 2 ignition curves into the Zeel, and changed the over-temperature warning light on the EGT gauge from the factory setting of 500*C, to 567*C.
Today, I really couldn’t think of anything else that I wanted to do on the bike, so I decided to push it outside, install the gas tank, start it up,
and add a stroker motor and a set of chrome plated pipes, to my collection of used parts.
I pre-mixed 2 liters of premium gas.
I grabbed the petcock and the new petcock o-ring so I could put them in the freshly waxed gas tank,
and discovered that 1 of the rubber washers that seal the petcock screws was missing, and the other 1 was hard and crusty.
Unfortunately, the genius in charge of this project didn’t order new petcock washers when he ordered the petcock o-ring, so the project’s on hold until parts arrive.

The bike was ready to go. Five or ten minutes of work and I could have taken it for a ride.Off Road wrote:My To-Do list is getting shorter. Or my memory’s getting shorter. Or both.
But, there's really not that much left to do.
Install the pipes and a gas tank – and I should be able to start it.
Install the seat, side panels, rear cowl and license plate – and I should be able to ride it up and down the street.
