Thanks for the accolades gents. I like doing things right the first time. It is usually cheaper in the long run!

I did get my Stator grommet replaced. You can read about it here. http://www.rzrd500.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15786

Weather has not been kind to me wanting to paint. I need to clear my wheels. Going with gloss.

I did clearance my power valves for the 65mm bore. They were close, so for piece of mind I went ahead and gave them some extra clearance. I also fabbed up some thicker power valve holder hold down clamps. No need to have the holders rotating around.

Blasted my calipers & painted them. I hope Kobras part numbers work, cause I ordered 2 sets. Will report back.

I am really waiting on the weather to straighten up. But I might have to swing into action with plan B, heck it is December 20th! It is wintertime!

Kobra, I will make a more detailed post and give it its own thread once I search & see what has been posted before. I luv shiny things!

My memory has faded. Is the sprocket carrier the same color for the gold & black wheels? (satin black)

From reading, I thought 66mm pistons would fit without clearancing the power valves. Could you explain a little about this?

Would love to see pics of your thicker power valve clamps. Pretty sure Wicked Motorsports make billet clamps, but haven't seen them anywhere else. One-off stuff is the best!

Thanks for the Grom talk. I was also looking at the MXR. I was thinking it would be great to have a quiet bike for stunting around. Usually, noise is what brings the po-pos. But, without a clutch, it's not very good for stunting. Your sig list of bikes is great! A lot of owners have a bunch of bikes that only serve one purpose.

Smoker, for some reason I did not see this post until now. Please accept my apologies.

I talked to Tony at TDR about machining my squish & boring my cylinders. At that time he said he likes to see 20 thousandths clearance between piston/ring & the valves. Being mine were close, and I had no way to measure, I couldn't get feeler gauges in there with all parts assembled, I took the safe route. Put them in my lathe & took a small cut out of the center of the valves & blended it in to the ends.

The valve holder clamp retainers I made out of a piece of thin steel that was wider than the groove in the holder. After the profile matched the stocker, I ground down the edge so it just went in to the groove. Fairly easy peasy. I do not have a pic, as they are already on my machine. I did see the thicker retainers on Norbo's site. I wanted a few things from his site, but looks like buying stuff is a pain in the ass, since he has no way to "check out" online.

Always glad to talk Groms. They seem to be breeding in my garage at night!

My Alta MXR was delivered charged to 100%. 2 days later Alta went out of Biz. Perfect. I needed to go into winter hibernation at around 50-60%. I had no choice but to ride it. I did reach for the clutch a couple times. Will take some getting used to "fo sho". It sure tore up my field!

Progress on the bike.

I am a firm believer that is never too early to be thinking about paint. This is the scheme that I have selected.

Image

The only thing I am going to change is the 2 blue colors. Going to flip them, similar to this pic...

This is Samron Jude's bike. Don't know where he is from. I pulled this from the Facebook Group. I will IM him & try to get some paint codes.

Waiting on some Norma thin hose (worm) clamps for the silicone hoses. I need to pressure test. I am procrastinating on this. I am afraid it wont pass. Although, I did something I never do with my restores.

I have never used a sealant on gasket surfaces. Except center cases with no gasket, that is a no brainer. With all the chit chat on here about leaks & base gaskets blowing out, I made the decision to use Motoseal on my base gasket and reed valves. Going to be a bitch to disassemble in the future.

Waiting on bearing & seals for the wheels. I decided not to clear coat. Went ahead & threw on the Continentals.

Been stressing out on fuel line & oil tank line. Finally ordered Buna-N Rubber Tubing 1/4" ID, 3/8" OD, 25 ft. Length from Mc Master Carr. 18 bux + shipping. I emailed a seller on the 'Bay about their alum. radiator. Worley brand. I asked how thick the core is. They said 16mm. 16mm? WTF, that's all? I will try GPI next. If someone knows of a thicker one please let me know. My memory wants to say the last one I bought was 45mm. But that was around 09 time frame.

Items I need to hunt down:

Seat latch (attached to the frame )
a cut rear fender for telefix tail.
Centerstand
kick stand
headlight lens & associated hardware. I have the bucket ordered.
Upper fairing
Airbox
Telefix seat

Speaking of Telefix, I called Spec II, I assume it was Gary that answered, and wanted to order a couple seats for the Telefix tail (I have 2). He informed me that the Telefix tail & fairing has been discontinued! Big bummer. I thought & still think that the Telefix tail/seat combo is the most comfy setup there is. This is a big loss for the RZ community!

I have been looking for repo plastics. I knew there was a dude in Ohio that made some. National Fiberglass I believe. After several failed attempts I finally got in touch. He said he would make some pieces parts for me, just let him know. I hope he is reasonable!

'Till I have more...

The round RZ350 headlight lens and the chrome rim were available from Yamaha this summer. I got a new HL Lens for mine as it was cloudy. I think it was around $75.
The Black black outer rim that actually holds the HL in place and screws to the bucket is harder to find as is the correct "W" shaped spring.

While perusing the OEM parts catalog, I found that the headlight bracket/cowl stay is available for purchase new. Don't know if you have one of those. I bought mine used for the same price lol.

I may have a spare set of seat latches but admittedly won't have them available until I get to that point in the project (months off).

Source for those silicone hoses?

99% of the time I look on eBay first. Then search elsewhere. For me half of the fun of a restore is finding the pieces parts that I need at a decent price. In this case I had time to wait.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Silicone ... 2749.l2649 snagged 2 sets.

Keep me in mind for the latches. Although the plan is 2 street-able machines restored in 3 months. Painting this summer.

RMM often has things on the site listed as available that are NOT. Last month I saw that OEM windshield was listed as available.....NOT.
They will tell you if you call and if not you will get a disappointing email.

I will not lie. I got excited at the prospect of finding parts I needed at RM. Most notably an airbox & a headlight pkg., all available on Rm's website.

So I called & gave them the part number for the headlight stay. She says it is a good part #.

After further questioning, I came away with these facts:
1. She was looking at the same fische as I was.
2. She couldn't tell me if it really was obsolete.
3. RM is not a "true dealer" although they do get their parts from Yamaha
4. RM is the last to know when a part has been put on the obsolete list.
5. The local dealers fische is the most up to date.
6. At least I was excited for 12 hours or so...

Interesting, good to know. I feel like I looked at that part before and it was NLA, and yet now it says you can order it. So something in their database changed? I did contact them and ask, and they said anything that shows "ships in 5-7 days" is ordered from a Yamaha warehouse first, and none of the resellers actually have stock.

Thats the modern world. gone are the days of dealers ordering lots of parts in and storing them for us to buy. When someone wants to restore a 2018 R1 in 30 years there will be no cool rare NOS spares in dusty wrappers on ebay for those bikes, the parts will just be gone as the Yam worldwide regional warehouses will have none etc.
