Whymee's #1 & #2 Restore

#1 Post by Whymee » Sun Nov 25, 2018 1:35 pm

The title says #1 restore. I have 3 more behind it to restore or sell.

My original intent was to buy these 5 RZ bikes & parts lot, do a mechanical restoration on them all, keep one bike, sell off the rest including parts, and restore just one. Now I am not to sure. They are growing on me. :smt007 I was in the market for a wintertime project. Now I have 5 (actually 4.5).

Backstory: Craigslist find. 5 RZ350 & a large spare parts lot for X amount. Bikes been sitting for many years. I ponied up the cash and hauled 3 home. Have to make a trip in about a month to get the other 2.

So now I have 2 on my lifts and this one will be the subject of this thread.

This one has the Telefix mounting brackets for the fairing and the Telefix headlight, but has a very thin fairing. Also the tail section is not Telefix, but it somewhat looks like it.

I am in the process of splitting cases, checking out the crank & replacing seals.

I did do my first attempt at pressure testing a motor with this machine. Damn new schrader valve won't hold air. Another trip to town using 15 bux of fuel to replace a 3 dollar part. Chaps my posterior...

Since I do not have the original bodywork for this machine, I am up in the air as to how the cosmetics will play out.

Question for the group. I have several parts I would like to sell, but I have no idea what their worth. I want to be fair to all parties concerned. Examples: Canadian 86 tank, Bassini pipes. What section of the forum do I ask a "What is it worth" post or parts ID questions? I do not want to post in the wrong place...

'Till I have more

I have been asking most of my random questions within my restoration thread.

That bike looks awesome, and a great foundation for a project!

Thanks Kobra. It is fairly complete. Needs a total going over.

I guess I will ask my odd questions here as you say you have been doing in your thread.

Few years ago I sold my last project over craigslist, Including all my spares. http://www.rzrd500.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3977 I happen to come across his cell number & I gave him a call. Long story short, I bought all the parts I sold him with the bike. This will help me with the restore of these 4 machines in the future. Telefix bodywork, rims, forks carbs some good stuff there.

Of course I asked for first right if refusal if and when he sells the bike...

Yes potential. I have 3 or 4 sets of original Toomeys, 1 DG, 2 or 3 sets Spec II, 1 of Factory Pipe and a set I am not sure of. Maybe Allspeeds or early JL's. They might make good trading stock for when I need some parts! :smt003

Tore down the motor today. I need a crank. The hot crank it seems for a stocker is a OEM Banshee crank. Looked around the web & found it at Motosport for $395.00. I figure since I may be rebuilding 3 more of these I went ahead & snagged 2 cranks.

Not to mention many other parts for the motor, But I will not bore ya'all with those details!

Purchased parts so far from Motosport, Partzillia, Ebay & my local dealer...

I would have gone OEM crank as well. You can't go wrong with the original Yamaha stuff. How did you determine you needed a crank?

Check out RockyMountainATVMC for OEM parts. They have the best prices 9 times out of 10, and free shipping over $75.

The thrust is way out of spec. I did not measure further.

Rocky's price is $384. Slightly cheaper. Over at vitalmx.com there have been some reports of flaky shipping. I decided to pass. So far Motosport has been upstanding to deal with. To each his own!

I considered having this one rebuilt. I even have a NOS center section. By the time I pay for shipping, labor & parts, I feel this was the better deal.

Yeah, easier to just buy new. FWIW I have ordered from RM since 2006, probably 40+ orders, and they are always accurate and show up here in CA within 2 or 3 days. Just another perspective :)

The bike is completely apart.

Bought some 65MM pistons off of ebay. The cylinder will go to Millennium Technologies when they come in. This build will get 31K cylinders. I have 1LO & 1AG cylinders in the waiting. Not sure if I need anything special with those cylinders. (head or carbs) I do know I will probably have to clearance the power valves for the new bore. I guess I will cross that bridge at a later date.

Oh, this will be a black frame....

As I said in an earlier post, my original intention was to keep one bike & sell the rest. Much like giving birth, I am getting quite attached to these two "babies". I do think these two will join my "stable". Now to find room...

Not heard of these cylinders at all. Wonder what the specs are? I thought the 1AG has 31k cyls and Ive no idea what a 1L0 is... a 4L0 is an LC, but a 1LO?

Matched the cylinders to the cases. Almost off 1/8th of an inch in some places.

Your photo has me wondering - is it okay to use when the alignment sleeves are corroded? Mine are slightly corroded and I'm afraid to try removing those studs.
