Another piece of the puzzle is here, the fairing bellypan, again thanks to my mate LB.

I also picked up a gasket set from Cruzin Image as Ive had his stuff before and its been good. Its made in Japan which gives you some confidence etc.

Other than that I had a bit of an epiphany regarding the suspension which is trashed on this bike, I'll fit my RGV stuff that was originally going on the 31k. Ive already done the brakes and other parts so its pretty much ready to go, I'll even put the Andreani kit in the forks on this one.

The crank for this one was redone by Link. It felt fine when i pulled it out but Link's view was that it was trashed and needed 2 rod kits, lucky to get away with just that really I think. Damn. Anyway, all done now... but I find I am actually one crank short for my builds, so this bike gifted its crank to my 31k which is ahead of it in the queue. The crank the 31k was going to use was passed on to the 251LC as that crank has less new parts in it and the lighter 250 pistons will give it an easier time... musical cranks, a game for all projects! :)

This week I picked up the cylinders from my reborer. We got away with a hone and new rings. Wiseco do supply rings but its not always easy to work out which ones you need and the catalogues don't all show rings, not even the online ones. Annoying - please fix that Wiseco... or are you just trying to make us buy pistons? Cheeky... Tho has to be said there isnt always a great saving just getting rings as some shops do good deals on piston kits.

With the cyls home I pulled the nasty oversize studs out of one of them (the other has standard ones) and tried to helicoil them but the rethreading the DPO had done meant I couldnt do a helicoil. Luckily I know a mate who can make me some studs with different sized ends. phew. I cleaned up the cylinders of their paint and will clean them in my mate's decent parts washer and paint them.

Next up I worked on the rings that were stuck in one of the pistons and by working the ends and playing in some WD40 and heat I managed to free the rings, wahooo! using the old rings I cleaned the groove and will do that a bit more before fitting the new rings, at least Ive saved the pistons.

Im debating fitting RGV parts to this build, you dont see many F2s done that way and I have all the parts in my shed... hmm... its also easier to do a F model as you dont need to fit anything to the forks as the fairing bolts to the frame. We'll see...

er, not any more... LOL Amusingly when he and I trade parts back and forth we quite often end up with the old parts we swapped a while back, funny how that works. Ive found over the years that if i sell or give away something i often need the same part later :/ Ive always gone with the idea that anything that was overstock was fair game for trades/mates but i often rob from that box when a new project comes along. This project scraped that barrel pretty much to the bottom as it was missing so many parts. I think we all have a similar box. Ive also been plating and powdercoating parts the past year and thats taken a lot of the crap from that box as well and turned it into 'as new' parts that are usable again, a wondrous transformation and very cathartic, I recommend it to anyone that has rusty/ugly parts in a box that you think you'll never use.

Yeah parts collecting for a project really is just a jigsaw with a bunch missing... you just scour ebay, the forums and your mates to locate the bits. Drop those in the box and hope when you get round to the build that youve got everything you need as you did it from memory of the picture on the box, lol. I tend to parts gather for years before starting a project, storing everything in tubs until Im ready to build. My garage is full of tubs, sigh... Whats funny is that Ive always build bike like this, often starting with just a bare frame or an engine and working up, so it feels normal to me, perhaps not so for others.

no worries on the muddy, hope you got sorted.

Hi Jon

yes got a muddy on the way from over east, even found the tray above the instruments unbroken, lets hope it stays that way, in Canada which is on its way too

Another belly pan arrived from the states with only one screw hole damaged, its now bare plastic only one crack which is now fixed Ill do the screw lug when i get back next

its beats remanufacturing the whole of the top lip, which i had started and will finish for a spare, birdcage is now good, mid panels too, headlight fairing still needs some attention on the inside lugs to neaten them up, then bead blast and send off for painting

Oh, cool. and if you found the 'parcel shelf' thats amazing those are so hard to find[1]... how about the loom covers, or did you have those?

sounds like youre almost sorted, do you have a thread going on your build at all?

I cleaned up the cylinders for this bike today and will paint them tomorrow... inching my progress along. I should hopefully finish the cleanup on the pistons as well and they should be ready for the new rings. Im not sure when this engine will get built, but its always good to have as many sub assemblies done as possible :)

[1] = for the trim for these you can use normal fairing / tailight offcut, the NLA part is only cos of the length not cos the trim is no made any more. I bought a NOS one recently to discover that lol

Hi Jon

No rebuild thread, it’s the one I started on this and the other forum but Photof@#$et ruined that and I’m not one for the other photo platforms TBH

The shelf is off a 1990 bike, it looks much the same at $50 posted I will take a punt, I have the tech to modify it if necessary

I do have another but it has a small chunk out of it where the mounting clip goes, fixable but newer is always better

The loom cover that fits on the birdcage I have, found one fully intact on fleabay in the uk last year with headlight, mask and birdcage, $150 posted from memory, the side ones? I don’t have

I’ll send you some photos on your email so you can have a squiz when I get back next

The 'shelf' is the same to 1992 at least, so if its off an F model RD/RD it will be right. Does it have the clips? if not thats your next search... :)

Cool send me the pics, always happy to have a look. Photobucket are wankers for what they did to the 'net, but dont let them get you down, people learn from seeing what others do...

If you want to sell the one with the chunk out of it, Gavin who posted on here earlier was looking for one, might be worth contacting him as he could have that repaired.

What 'side ones'?... the two either side of the birdcage bolts is what i meant. Bloody F1s have stuff thats so hard to find...
