Well this was the RAL6006 colour that is the closest to the actual colour, not all Olives are the same of course. This is WW2 german helmet colour lol. This is a satin, thats quite glossy. Powder has a few measures of glossyness, but lets not get into that here lol.

Today I did yet more powder, pics to follow perhaps. I did the main horn bracket and also the reflector bracket and the kickstarter as the one I had was rusty. we'll have to see how that holds up, but so long as it doesnt hit anything it should be fine. Then it was back to satin black for yet more parts... LOL

should be the same, but make sure ts the RAL6006 code, there are a lot of variations, but only one colour for each RAL code.

A good mate of mine stopped in and picked up my zinc plating for me as its more local to his place, these are the pics he sent me... ohhh they look great! Thanks m8!!! :smt006

Ok, yes there is more than one bike's worth of bits here, some are also for another mate of mine and some are from my other projects. I actually think this is the first of 3 trips to the platers I will make as some of my bikes are built and these bits will swap onto those and their parts will get plated later.

So, in case anyone is under any illusions, this lot was mostly junk. I had boxes and boxes of crappy rusty, painted, oversprayed, carboned up and damaged bolts and they were just sat there. Finally after an epiphany I realised I could turn them into useful things rather than have them sit here 'too good to throw away, but ugly as sin', and thats how this started.

Of course, you cant save them all... some threads were trashed, some bolts were bent and some of the heads were just too mangled to be worth the work, and some were so pitted they would never be 'new looking' again.

If anyone is interested, I cleaned everything in small vats of vinegar (I found you should change it when it is yukky black and smells vaguely of onions!) and brushed them with a small stainless wire brush - wear gloves! The black sludge gets into your skin and looks and smells terrible. Naturally, some needed much more work than others. The vinegar lifts paint, loctite, silicone, gaskets and of course rust! Its a slow process but each day I claimed back more and more 'good' bolts from my stash. Some of the transformations were legendary to be honest, what a few days before had looked like rusty junk often cleaned up to be 'as new'.

After vinegar'ing you need to stabilise the acid (water dip) and then coat them with something that will stop rust, and I used Metal Rescue's Dry Coat product. This has worked well.

I also dressed the JIS screws that needed it with a gentle hammering to give the slots a chance at looking good, and cleaned up some of the heads of bolts that were mullered as well with a hammer and file.

The platers seemed pleased I wasnt bringing them rusty and horrible stuff and I think I got a better deal cos of that, perhaps cos it saves their own dip from contamination.

Sadly they dont do the green passivate, but many of the bolts were zinc so thats what I was after, as were the LC mudguard 'hoops'. :)

Im already working through cleaning up for my next batch, it will include things like head bolts, water pump plates, gearchange rods, lock/latch plates and levers and the oil pipe clamps and other engine parts.

So can you spot anything you dont recognise in these pics?!

Thanks Rory.

One thing I should say is that you probably dont really need to clean up and prep your stuff at all with most platers as they pickle everything to eat rust, oil, paint etc. But what I would add is that if you want a better end product then its worth cleaning and repairing everything yourself first, that way you can chuck away anything useless and save a bit of money as well... plus, lets face it youre only doing this really to use on restos and bikes you want 'nice' so anything you can do to get a better and more OEM finish is worth the effort, right?! :)

One thing i didnt say is that plating is like painting and reflects what you do with the prep, ie I probably should have scotchbright'ed the LC muddy hoops, at least on the lower part as OEM they were more shiny as standard than the finish I have now as I had them plated over a blasted finish. Tho if you remember the story of the nightmare these hoops had become (powdercoating gone bad) then you might understand I was just pleased they have the OEM coating again, and really you only see the very bottom edges of them when on the bike so I think its fine really, but worth remembering if you do go this route.

PLEASE NOTE:

And then in July 2017 Photobucket came and fucked it all up for everyone...

This build started off with Imageshack hosting the photos, they got greedy and while they continued to host the photos for a while I moved to Photobucket and all was great with the world until they decided we needed to pay $399/yr to post our pics across the net.

So, Thanks photobucket, you trashed this thread and thousands (more like millions!) of other around the world.

IF YOU WANT TO READ THIS THREAD WITH THE PHOTOS AND MY REHASHED TEXTS (BUT NOT THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON THE THREAD), HAVE A LOOK AT MY WEBSITE, 2SMOKED.COM.

haha, well it can be used, but will need work or a custom steering stop.

Did more prep on my forks today, should be able to build them later this week :)

Some stuff is quite repetitive, just flows. I find that with just setting the bike up, getting it together. For me, it's the tweaking and tuning that takes up most of the time. I'm loving the dyno. So worth the cash for setting up the desired product.

If only I had a dyno close to me that knew what a 2 stroke was, let alone could tune one :/

As above I've been working my way round to painting the swingarm of this bike gloss black. The reason I dont have a gloss black swinger is that you might recall I found the one that came with the bike was actually quite bent and it was replaced with this one, which needed to be painted. The thought was to paint a bunch of gloss back frame parts at the same time so Ive been gathering and cleaning up, blasting and spraying with primer anything that needed gloss with a view to setting up a paint booth and spraying a bunch in one go. So far Ive not only got the swinger for this bike, I've 3 center stands that I had to repair and fettle to bring them up to scratch, some were missing or bodged foot levers and some had their edges ground off. Also Ive a rear subframe and some other parts like headlight ears from another project and an RZ center stand. Id like to paint the frame of that project and the 421's frame around the same time, so Im almost there, just one frame to clean up, blast and hit with primer and im setup, should be good timing as spring starts soon here.

While Ive been doing that work Ive not been totally idle and Ive been working through some other sub assemblies including building up the footrests. I used some of my re zinc'd bolts and the best of the OEM dome nuts and managed to locate and use all the correct fixings. I fitted the new footrests and the passenger footrests that I worked on a while back, then bolted both sides to the bike with the exhaust hanger fixings in place. This felt very good indeed, not only is this a significant step forward but its great to be using all the OEM fixings now they are restored. Sadly no pics, the frame is now out of the way as in the next week or two I will be setting up a bit of a paint shop where the bike lift sits. :)

While I await the last bits to be ready for paint, I am about to embark on building up the front forks. These will get legs that have been rechromed locally (Thanks A1 in Lidcombe) with all new seals and clips of course.

The question is wether to fit the progressive springs and Goki air-cap tops that came with a recent project I bought. Theyre really for that other project, but I have them just sat here and figure I can always pull them out later if i wanted... the problem is that neither are 'as delivered by Yamaha', but the engine on this bike isnt totally standard so maybe thats less of an issue... hmm... we'll see.
