Checking if 2000 grit wetsanding (VS 800 grit) will make any difference after polishing.

I beadblasted my F/N2 versions and on my 31k/F1/N1 units I blasted the parts that arent polished ala OEM, I also really like that look if done with fine glass beads.

I would say that the closest to original is the one sanded with 2000 grit in a single direction, then clear coat. The part sanded to 2000 grit is really looking good. The thing with the bead blast finish is that it stain easily and become ugly. If you clear coat it, it may not look like aluminum anymore. I'll try the clear coated bead blast aluminum later to see how it looks, I may try to do an full engine like that if it looks fine.

I always thought the 31k style were polished and then lacquered, thats why i was doing mine like that. I asked on norbos forum about it when i did it. interesting yours were different.

The bead blasted parts on my LC footrests came up great when powdered with crystal clear (pics in my resto thread i think and my F1 has pics too of the 31k style perhaps?) and the N/F2 ones I left bare on my F1 build and have been fine and just clean up with WD40 if they look bad, but i agree its not ideal, i just did it cos i'd bought the blaster and it looked cool. I wasnt after an OEM finish on that set.

Interested to see how you go with the clear.

By memory and by looking at pictures on the web, the aluminum on these part (peg holder and front forks) are originally quite dull under the clear coat/lacquer.

Steve on Norbos forum sent me pics of a set of nos ones thats why i polished my main flat parts. Its not a bright polish as the lacquer dulls it. The bits Yama san couldnt polish easily were dull, hence i used fine glass beads on there, which came out just like the OEM finish on mine under the dirt and lacquer.

Maybe your market was different? I just dont know... sorry.

This was the thread where i asked:
