Re: Low Budget Purple Project
I have light sensitive eyes, and the majority of the time I Have to wear sunglasses, or else I can't see the road.
I could install a tinted shield on my helmet, but if I end up riding after dark, then I can't see the road.
Carrying both face shields with me every time I go for a ride, would solve the problem for a while,
but it would be a hassle, and likely end up with me have 2 scratched face shields..
A few helmet manufacturers (Scorpion, Zeus) make helmets with flip down tinted visors.
In the Up position the tinted visor sits between the inner and outer shells of the helmet.
When you flip it down, tinted visor covers your eyes like a pair of sunglasses, and leaves a gap between the inner and outer shell.
Aria seems to think this gap might compromise the effectiveness of the helmet, so they don't offer this feature.
Instead, they offer a different shield, with an external flip down visor.
I read a number reviews on the product, and the majority of them were positive.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to road test it for another 6 months.
I played with it a bit in the shop, and it's easy to raise, lower, lock, unlock. Seems to work pretty good.
Only problem that I see is that the bottom of the face shield is not tinted.
I think I'm going to fix that.

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
Some times, it's not What you know, but Who you know.
For instance, I know that ALL the motorcycle shops in Canada, get their "aftermarket parts",
(chains, sprockets, levers gauges, batteries, tires, brakes, pistons, carbs. helmets, apparel, etc, etc, etc),
from the same 10 or 15 distributors/importers.
And the majority of the parts are supplied by just 4 or 5 distributors.
So, if you go into ANY bike shop in the country and order up,
an Aria helmet, a set of BT45's, a Barnett clutch, EBC brake pads, fork seals, chain, sprockets, battery, a carb rebuild kit and some new levers,
then every shop would be getting all those parts from the same 2 or 3 distributors.
For instance. there's only a couple of authorized distributors for Koso EGT gauges,
and only 1 authorized distributor for Arai products.
Every bike shop in Canada gets their Aria helmets from the same distributor,
He sets the Suggested List Price ($110.00 for the shield), and then provides the Dealers with a discount.
He has a maximum discount on the products, so the Absolute Minimum that Any bike shop will pay for an Aria shield, is X amount of dollars.
However, just knowing this information, does not get me all my parts at a cost of X + 10%.
Fortunately, Knowing the right people does.

That's a cool setup! I have a bell revolver with the tinted visor between the shells, but I have been thinking about going back to Arai for my next helmet.Off Road wrote:I have light sensitive eyes, and the majority of the time I Have to wear sunglasses, or else I can't see the road.

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
Last August I bought some new gear.
Now that the gloves have stretched, the 2XL is bit big.
They're not sloppy loose, and they are still the Nicest gloves I've ever owned,
but they're not perfect, like when I first first got them.
I should have bought the XL, and when they stretched, they'd be perfect.
A while back, I learned that there was only ONE importer/distributor, that was carrying the Teknic gear.
And he stopped carrying the product line over a year ago.
None of the Canadian bike shops can order Teknic products from any of their standard suppliers.
About the only way to buy Teknic gear, is if a shop still has some Old Stock on a shelf.
There's 1 shop in Calgary that has an XL pair of Teknic Apex gloves on the shelf.
It's entirely possible that this is the only pair for sale in the entire country.
However, they only spare cash that I had, was set aside as a Paint Fund for the bike.
And you guys all know how anxious I am to spend large, and get some shiny paint on my bike.
Anyway, to make a long story short, I now have a really nice pair of backup gloves.
And I have a really, really nice pair of new gloves.
And I still have $12 left in my Paint fund.
I can live with that.
When I bought the gloves, the extra large XL size, felt a bit tight. The 2XL fit much better, so that's what I got.Off Road wrote:
The gloves are sooo soft, and comfortable.
The gauntlet part is easy to adjust so that it fits tight against the jacket.
The Kevlar on the palm, is somewhat rough, and provides additional grip on the rubber bar grips, to keep your hands from sliding off.
The pre-curved fingers, and the nice soft leather, naturally put my hands in the right position,
and provide excellent feedback from the brake lever.
A noticeable improvement over the old gloves.

Re: Low Budget Purple Project
I know a guy, who knows a guy, who is selling his bike, and his wife's bike.
But it's a package deal, you have to take both of them. It's all or nothing.
My guy really wanted 1 of the bikes.
And he really didn't want the other 1.
That's where I came in.
It's an 87. Needs a battery and a new set of tires, but the paint and bodywork are in really good condition.
Engine is out of an 85 donor bike, so it has 31K cylinders, but the PO is still using the 87 power jet carbs on it.
The bike also comes with a few of the left over parts from the 85 donor bike.
Wheels, forks, tree's, swing-arm.
Shock, headlight, airbox, oil & coolant bottles, clip-ons, and all the brakes & master cylinders.
All the electronics. CDI, PV controller, Reg.rec, wiring harness, turn signals, carburetors, a manual,
and a set of 85 gauges with 5,967 km on them.
Footpegs, rad & rad cover, headlight/fairing bracket, tail-light, grab-rail, 1 set of Progressive fork springs, and 2 sets of oem mirrors.
Tali-light bracket, all the fenders, and a Red Seat.
A complete set of 85 body work.
The paint's not bad. it's not really great, but it's not bad.
All the body panels are really good. Not a single broken mounting tab on any of them.
And in the last box, I have the original motor out of the 87 RZ, with the stator and all the covers.
It needs a rebuild, but it's complete.
It's damn near a bike in a box, or in this case 6 boxes.
As far as I can tell, there are only 5 parts missing.
The frame, the tank, the windshield, and the 2 exhaust pipes.
So, I'm now the proud owner of an 87 RZ, but there's a problem.
I don't want it. I can't use it. And I couldn't afford it if I did.
However, I could use a few of the parts from the donor bike.
Rory, call me.
Seriously, we should talk.
