TDR Drag Bike Build #1

#1 Post by TDR_50 » Tue Aug 05, 2014 10:33 am

TDR RZ Drag Bike #1

I have just started a project that is our Dyno test bike and Drag bike for testing many of our new products and exhaust pipes. It will have 2 complete setups:

Setup #1: Drag Strip Only. This will allow the testing for all our ATV drag race components. We have a motorcycle rear wheel dyno and this is our primary bike to go to for testing. Once we have the particular part tested on the dyno, then the drag strip on this bike we restest all the components on different Atv's.

Setup #2: Road Race setup. By swaping out the rims and rear suspension we can also test our RZ based products on the Street and at the Track.

It all started with this frame that I purchased form Calvin Pollet's wife Elaine. He had acquired the rolling chassis from a customer & Forum member and was to use it to develop and test the TSS 500cc cylinders. Calvin and I had long conversations about the issues with the TSS 500cc setup and I was getting geared up to take on the project. Unfortunately Calvin's health deteriorated at that and he has since passed away. So this bike build is dedicated to Calvin and his incredible passion for 2 stroke motors. My passion runs as deep as his and this is to be a Very Special build for me.

Getting Started:

Not much to look at and she was a bit rough but a rolling chassis to start with. Over the next few months I will be adding pictures and updating this project.

Next was to strip the frame & remove all the unnecessary brackets to take away some weight. Since this build is to be a Dyno / Drag Race / Street ride I chose to keep it more like a stock RZ configuration that a low slung Pro Stock chassis. That will come later. My goals for this build is to develop different engine combinations, Billet parts, Exhaust systems, & High Performance parts for all the street riders out there.

After all the brackets were removed I added a Flat Track seat & started to do a mock up of a low profile Aluminum gas tank. I picked the aluminum as we run Methanol, Propylene Oxide, Nitro Methane, & just about anything to make more Horsepower. First I use cardboard to get the basic shapes & size. Then I started with the base of the tank. I removed the original front mount to save weight.

Adding the sides, front & back. Using .062" thick aluminum is quite challenging to get the curves laid out with out havening lots of wrinkles.

Great project with a superb back story.

FYI Tony, if you find some later wheels you will save a few lbs too.

Finally had some time to work on this project.
JonW : Not really concerned on the weight as I will be building a super light weight drag chassis later. This build is s street/drag setup

Slowly hand hammered the top shell and fitted it to the lower half. Lots of time but it turned out very well.

Just a std tank. It will only have about 1 gallon in it at a time. I did not get a chance to weight it yesterday but super light.

That gas tank is a piece of work ,how many hours do you think it took to get to this stage?

How are you securing the tank to the frame?
