Console restoration decal

Looked on line and found the decal to replace the L and R, oil neutral lettering after repainting the instrument cluster/clock cowling (4L0). Satin Black Plastikote worked well on it without primer. The replacement lettering appears to be a lay over decal - has anyone had success using this decal?. Most of the letter has faded off and appears to finite to re-paint. Don't see the point of re-cycling the clock cover because of faded lettering but would still like a refurbished look. Thx Scott.
