Interesting, my '85 is the same paint job but with the full fairing sold in Canada and has a solid red fender, different style too. The variations on these things is dizzying.

I actually liked the all red fender, with black at back better....but since I was painting the whole thing over. I figured I'd paint the WHOLE thing over...as it should be.

Getting closer... needs to be done before thanksgiving...
That's when I pick up two new projects. :smt009

Looks great! Can you give any advice on how you did the multiple colours? I am going to paint my bike and there needs to be a nice clean line between the colours and Im not confident... :/

To be honest, I've been painting for almost 35 years...and still found this slightly challenging to do correctly (gas tank)...or at least to my standards.
When using decals from factory, or reproduction....the color separation can actually go anywhere under the decal. In my case, the decal is a blue stripe, and has a pearl white stripe next to it. So the small pearl white stripe goes against the red, and the blue goes to the white painted area. I tried to make the red separation as close to where the decal goes as possible, just to keep the raised paint edge from showing through the decal. When I did the tank, I took a different route, and left it all white. Then put the decal on, then painted the red right to the edge of the white stripe on the decal.

So basically, the tape/stripe kit keeps the lines nice and sharp.

If your doing something custom, I can show you that as well....but you need quality masking tape either way.
Below are pics when I was painting my Aprilia RS250 about 6 years ago.

I'd love to leave this area and head southwest (for good, one of these days) ..... looks like snow is possible here tomorrow :smt022 ....
I've done a few bikes for friends, but it usually takes me 3x longer than I expect it to.....Nothing but damn Harleys around here, and they have way too many areas to paint (as well as my lack of interest in the brand...) :smt012

Not to but in, and beautiful painting by the way, but I just painted a chin fairing and I didnt get the decals for it...so I had to paint on the stripes, and I learned a tip that may help some of you guys painting stripes. Lets say you just painted a surface, and its solid black. You now need to put a white stripe across it, but you're worried that the white will seep under the tape, created an uncrisp line. First, you tape the stripe off over the solid black surface using good auto painting tape. Then you spray the area you want to be white with a light coat of the black first. That way, any paint that is going to seep under the tape will be black and plug all the little channels under the tape where paint might seep. Then you spray on your white stripe. Peel your tape straight back, and you should have a very crisp line. Sand it down to minimize the raise, and you should be good...especially for a piece like the chin fairing....maybe not the tank. Some of you may know this, or have better ways of doing it, but I wish I knew this before I sprayed mine the first time, and had to sand and respray because the lines weren't crisp.

We do that on the spray textured walls in our house to get straight lines when there is a color change :smt023
