Goodbye 80's custom....Hello red, white and blue

#1 Post by busa1300 » Sun Sep 15, 2013 12:57 am

It's taken a LOT of thinking to convince myself of this....but I'm biting the bullet, and removing the paint job I sprayed on this bike back in 1986.
Here we go..........
Just playing with tape on the tail I recently bought, to help give me an idea of what it might look like in person.

And hopefully it will look as good or better than it did in 1985 when I first brought it home :smt001

this is picking up where

Agreed... The only place stuck in the 80's are Aussie radio stations... OEM always looks a winner on these bikes...

First thing is get the paint off......

This is the best route for the two types of surfaces.

All cleaned up and ready for acid etch primer, then a couple coats of base white to seal it up.....need to play around with the mixing colors and get the right white and pearl next....

Looks like you did a very nice job and would've taken some thinking to decide to remove your earlier work.

I did what you are doing now (new paint etc.) It's like giving it a rebirth. Nothing goes better with a rebirth, than a new paint job. It will look great and you be happy that you did it

Side covers got worked over today a bit. Most of my paint, and some of the original paint is now history, with a coat of urethane primer to seal all the various paint edges. Let it dry for several days, to let the vapors out and let the primer shrink, before painting the base color. Helps keep the feathered paint edges and scratches in plastic from the sanding...to never come back to haunt me.

Yep....wheels are dymag...check link at top of page

Sprayed the white pearl, but it looks too dark in my opinion...might need to use different pearl.
Laid out some tape on it to give myself an idea of what it would look like with the other colors...
My decals are ready to go, as soon as I get the colors figured out, and where to lay the lines for the red paint.

This tail looked reasonably good when I first looked at it.........but when I started sanding it, I ended up finding 9 completely different levels of paint and primer.
Kinda like a topographical map.
It's had quite the life...........Insane
Anyway....I got it smoothed out and in primer..
