I have powder coated 5 builds, (10 wheels) and 5 frames. And the odd top triple tree thrown in for good measure.
Its hard as rocks, and stays that way. I have never had a problem with stone chipping, brake fluid, or fuel spills damaging the finish.
Never had any damage with the tyre fitter I use putting new tyres on freshly powder coated rims either.
I did consider that heat treatment may have a negative effect on the wheels, but it was a passing consideration.
I will ask the powder coater next time and see what he says.

Appreciate that. The wheels are bead blasted to clean the previous paint n' ready to go one way or the other. I have access 2 both options in gold.

I just mounted a set of older tires to some black powder coated spoked rims with zero damage. It was easy. Used rim protectors as well but they there likely not necessary. I expect it would be even easier with a tire machine. I have changed a ton of tires but haven't done one in a couple years. Forgot how little the rim is actually touched.

Leaning towards powder coating the spokes and interior of the rim leaving the outer ring polished where it touches the tire. That way tire removal will not be an issue.

Experimented with Dupli-Color metalic gold. Interesting results for $12.

That looks great, and you can always touch it up, unlike powder coating.

1st coat only. Left the outer rim bear for balance weights and tire irons. Color bright yet not brassy. I was surpised actually Rory. Hoping it will go well with competition yellow / blk decals - got some swatches to do next.

Looks like the US RZ350 wheels. Gotta love rattle cans.

Another myth is that you can't touch up powder. Just use automotive paint unthinned and brush over the scratch or chip. It sticks nice and covers the error. We powdercoated one set and have been happy with them so far. Talked to a metal expert before doing and as stated earlier, the heat is a non issue as the temps are way below damage levels. If you paint directly on the aluminum I would recommend the green self etch primer as it is made for that and it sticks really good.

Touching up powder coat right after it leaves the oven is easy. Just spray on more powder and put it back in. Have yet to try after fully cooled but I think I will experiment in the future and I expect it will work.

To all of you out there that have a negative view of powder coating I think for the most part it is very much unfounded. It is actually easier for the amateur to do a good powder coating job than it is a good paint job provided you have the tools. Its hard, chemical resistant, durable, and just all around awesome.

Prep things properly and it turns out awesome. I will put up pictures of the RD200 racebike we are building at some point in the future. Satin finish with a 3 layer job. Think the only more interesting option would have been anodizing.

If you are considering Satin colors, USE powder coating. Have seen many flat color cars that must have looked amazing once done but look like crap from bird poo, gas, or tree sap. This does not happen if you powder coat.

Good point about the touch up idea re powder coating. Look fwd to the RD200 rim photos - 200 was my 1st bike '72 vintage.

Excuse my ignorance, but can wheels be anodized? I've been thinking of getting my wheels refinished also and would like something like this.

Correct. Gold powder coat options are very limited.
