Installing Solo Seat Cowl - Test Fitting

#1 Post by mudchucker » Sun Feb 23, 2014 9:58 pm

So I bought a new repo fiberglass solo seat cowl of Ebay from glassndude and wanted to test fit before sending it off for paint. Not sure on the proper way to install it. I removed seat and took of rear tail section, put the brackets on seat. Now do I attach cowl on seat before installing seat or do I put seat back on then attach cowl? :smt017 Either way it seems to be a tight fit! Also does the rear of the cowl fit over the rear taillight or is it suppose to go in front of the rear taillight? :smt017 Again seams to be a tight fit, didn't want to force it and do any damage to cowl.

Thanks in advance!

The cowl bolts to the seat, and fits over tail light. Fit the seat in as normal, front first. Then drop the back down into the locks. Solo cowls have an tab on the inside and use o-rings to hold down the back, they attach around the blinkers.

orings... thats on oem solo seats.... does it also have oring fasteners on glass copy ??

are the holes pre drilled or do you need to do it... i would install seat first then position solo tail so it all lines up ???

orings need to be placed on indicator stems.... so you may need to remove indicators

Figured it out, the cut out for the tail light was not cut out large enough to fit over the taillight. A little dremel work fixed that. Question, do you add a piece of rubber stripping on the edge of the solo seat cowl that goes over the tail light? like the stock tail section.
The glass cowl did come with hooks underneath but you have to drill holes for the brackets and pad.

I tried to fit mine this weekend and it is very tight on the edges where the glass fits around the seat. Has anyone else had this problem? My seat has been recovered in the past and may be a little wider but even allowing for it, it still looks tight. I will be fitting an new seat cover and don't want to destroy it putting the cowl on and off!

Wow! That's a nice unit.
I think I still like the idea of sitting on the rails though. I'm going to find a race seat or make one.

Yes, installing brackets but you have to put a hole in the seat cover right? I am waiting for the ebay guy in Japan who sells the seat pads to get some more!

I was looking at my seat again last night and it appears to be thicker than I remember on the side where the cowl fits.
Can anyone post a couple of pictures of their seat with the brackets in place but the cowl removed and also a couple of the cowl in place for reference? I am pretty sure I a going to end up having to trim mine where it fits around the seat. Anyone else had to do this?

Huge help. My cowl fits against the seat all the way around, the OEM one has clearance over the top of the seat.
I am not keen on putting holes in my nice new seat cover for the brackets though! I will look for or make some nice grommets to cover the holes when using the dual seat.
Anyone got a pic of the solo cowl in place on their bike but with the pad removed?

On that last pic 2 posts above, I've never seen the black pieces that extend horizontally from the bottom of seat/cowl bracket extending to rear of bike. Wonder if that is some type of rear fender eliminator kit??
