Depinning Stator Connectors

#1 Post by Whymee » Sun Dec 16, 2018 3:50 pm

I am trying to replace my stater grommet. I cannot seem to depin the round terminals.

Been searching on this forum & on the web. Everything talks about flat pins. This is a round pin, much like a bullet connector. Looked all over the web for a pic of the female connector. I have found nothing.

So far I have not found the tang to bend back that is keeping the terminal in the connector. I am assuming the tool goes in the front, opposite of the "break" in the terminal, as seen from the front.

I need some pointers, guys, this is driving me insane!

Look in from the back and you will see where they are, Mine were opposite the split in the round terminal, Exactly where your screwdriver head is, You will need a smaller screwdriver to get right down there

Buy the right tool, its still hard but much easier than a screwdriver :/

The Lisle 57750 Wire Terminal Tool Kit is a good one as it has a bunch of options.

I have used a tiewrap before to do this.
Cut off the tapered end of the tiewrap as its too thin. Then cut the thicker end of the tiewrap narrow enough to fit in that groove. Ram it in.
Probably take a couple tries.

The retaining tabs are on the outside of that style, the correct removal tool is a thin wall tube that slips over the OD of the terminal. The bare terminal is shown here, 6th item down;

I have purchased from them before and service was good.

If you have some brass shim-stock (very thin metal that is stiffer than tin foil), you can roll it around the wire and slide it into the connector from the back. If you push/pull the wire while forcing the rolled shim-stock into the connector it will push past the burs and then both will come free.

Just get the real tool, its hard enough with that I cant think how awful it would be to do without.

Yes - buy the tool. There is a star-shaped one that does several different connector shapes and it was cheap...

I do want to close out this thread. Hopefully others will prosper from my experience.

The Lisle 57750 was suggested as the tool to depin. I thought 40 bux was outrageous to replace a 7 dollar part. So I took a chance on this 11 dollar tool from the 'Bay:

I am happy to say that this did the trick. As others have said, it is not easy even with the right tool, but with some patience, it certainly is within most of our wheelhouse.

I would like to thank the forum for the advice & pointing me in the right direction.

BTW: the stator grommet can be had from Ricky Stator for 7 bux shipped....
