the above link is the full Service Manual
I found this elsewhere on this site but can't seem to find the thread with the original link. Save it to your drive- I probably won't leave this up forever. Electrical testing starts around page 179. The picture below is further along at 236.

Source coils: red/green/brown
(85 model red/white instead of red)

In the past I'd have said that everyone not colorblind could install it. But after having assisted quite some guys with seemingly four left hands, I'd revise it to: Get someone capable of doing vehicle electrical work (i.e. someone who can read and follow a wiring diagram and can solder/crimp the connectors).
If you don't have such support or are too stingy to pay for it, then stay with OEM used parts.

I checked out the stator and coil and they appear to be in spec..
charge coil r-b 5.3
br-g 235

pickup coil w/r-w/g 108

stator coil resistance .7 little high

coil black-org .6 little high

side stand switch ok.. thought neutral switch was open but after a few wiggles it is ok ?
not sure where to go next , control box or cdi ? any tests for these ??

The steps are basic. Eliminate the coils by testing. Check for Ground and wiring faults, switches/fuses/connectors/chaffed wires etc. Then if all else is good, replace the CDI. There is no test for the CDI other than to swap for a "known good unit."
Thorough testing of other components is imperative since CDI units are expensive and generally not returnable.

The 84 CDI is a real issue. It's the epoxy in the box. It shrinks and breaks connections. Maybe it was just a bad batch of epoxy.

Seriously? Whack the CDI box and now you have spark?

I've had car headlights come to life after giving them a whack.
I've had car starters fail and then work a few more times after a good whack.
I seen computer hard disks come to life after a good whack.
I've even seen jukeboxes play after a good whack (The Fonz). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4isQUdVknE
But I have never seen a CDI box come to life after a whack.

In any case, if a good whack got it working, then a second whack will probably make it fail. Look for a connection issue and if none found, buy a replacement.

AaAAAy 👍 yes will replace after a short ride and make sure everything else is ok. Just happy to have found the culprit. Thx

I asked Borut at Zeeltronic for a simple plug and play solution for the 84 because so many guys were calling with failed units and many didn't want to program, so with the PCDI10T, just wire, replace and go. The 84 RZ is the reason I sell that unit. It's a very simple install. That CDI, the PCDI10T only controls the ignition curve and uses the stock PV controller (there's a wire that feeds rev info to the stock PV controller), it comes pre-loaded with the stock curve, but it also has a port for the programmer if you decide you want to do programming at some point, just get the programmer.

Using a PCDI gives away at least half of the potential as it requires working source coils - and these fail from time to time.

A PDCI is a DC type that only requires a working 12V supply (which fails less often). It's suitable as a "repair" when the source coils failed.
The same applies to the Ignitech units, they're all DC type.

And a unit without PV controller is just as pointless like Pamela Anderson without boobs.
If you want a plug and play box, you can also order a stock ignition AND PV curve which only leaves connecting some f...ing wires to the end-user.

If you become fond of programming later, it's not much effort to change the PV curve, too.
Just to repeat it: Measured performance increase for optimised ignition curve is around 4 kW, for PV up to 3kW.

MK, what fails more, batteries or source coils? No battery, no sparky with PDCI right? correct me if I'm wrong. Also guys with aftermarket cyl's and no pv's use these as well but typically program.

As much as I like the idea of a more efficient ignition system, having seen the picture of that bike at the top of his post, I would tend to want a stock 1985 CDI box with connectors modified to match the 1984 wire harness. I'm not so sure that a zeel ignition would be a value-add for a nearly pristine 1984 RZ350.

I guess looking at the zeal that is the easiest way out for me. Sounds like a easy installation and done . I would like to go to the 85 cdi but have not been into this long enough to figure out all I would need and where to purchase it. I would be a little afraid of getting used stuff as I might fall back into the same old no spark ugh mode ⚡️😩🏍
