Lithium/solid state batteries

#1 Post by evan_calgary » Fri Oct 20, 2017 6:30 pm

Looking for a smallish battery for the RZ. I realize there are those out there that do not feel these are an appropriate place to run them. I don't really care.

Wondering if there is a base size recommended. or a way to correlate the stock battery to the solid state/lithium ones?

Any recos from those currently using them?

Shorai. Weighs about 8 oz. Has a really good charhing/storage charger works really well. Running it for the last 3 seasons without problems.

Am I right in thinking that a Lithium solution runs as a total loss system and you charge it with the supplied wall charger only?

Ballistic EVO2 4 cell. I've used one for at least 4 seasons, never charged it, just put it in the house in the winter. I had trouble with my first one but also had charging system issues at the time, their customer service was first rate.

Guess I should clarify a bit here guys...looking for the specific battery model. I can find lots of brands listed out there but curious which model/size people have gone for.

Jon, planning on using as standard battery. I use one on my RZ (defunct company, not even sure of the capacity) and have had zero issues despite the gripes I have heard.

No, it works the same as a standard lead battery. Charges the same way as a lead battery. Half the size and a fraction of the weight.

I have both variants:
The race bike runs a total loss system with a 4800mAh LiFePo. It needs to be balance charged with high-end charger.

The road bike uses plug and play LiFePo batteries in a casing that includes the balancer. As a result you can use them in a normal bikes charging circuit.
But caution: They still tend to fail and/or to melt after some time. Here's one of mine ...

I have the same battery in 2 bikes. 1 came out of a race bike I parted out. I have no idea how old that battery was but it still works fantastic.

Pretty sure these batteries have a rep for bursting into flame.

Not sure what the odds are of my lithium battery exploding or burning down my bike.

So, for now, I'll keep using them.

We have bikes come into the shop displaying issues. When we discover it does not have a lead acid battery, we change it out and the issues clear up. I've said this before on another thread. I realize many are running these things with no issues, but buyers beware. Not all of these batteries are good performers. From the comments, many of you have no side effects or major failures. I'm not willing to deviate from the lead acid, as it's something that I can count on. Just my $0.02.
