Odometer works but speedo doesn't

#1 Post by bryanaverill » Mon Apr 10, 2017 5:17 pm

Just started malfunctioning. Any trouble shooting ideas? I've never repaired or even removed a gauge. Perhaps this is something for a pro?

Mine will occasionally just stick at zero. When I does I tap the face with my finger until it starts working.

If the bike was stored in a hot place, the needle can get stuck while sitting at zero. However, another possibility is that the "bell" that encloses the rotating magnet gets loose inside the meter. It needs repositioning and glueing with a good adhesive. It is not for a pro, but requires good tools and hand to eye coordination.

OK, it has not been ridden much this winter and we've had plenty of freezing days. I'll try tapping it (duh). If it persists, are there any special procedures to remove the gauge from the dash and then open it up?

I had this exact same issue on my FZ750 just prior to the speedo blowing up internally. The needle fell off. Eventually the odometer even quit working and now I have to fork out $300 use for a replacement speedo. :(

It works again and I didn't do anything. I suspect there is some goopy lubricant that was too stiff in the cold weather. Looks like a rebuild project in the near future.
