Which battery?

#1 Post by expat » Fri Apr 18, 2014 2:40 pm

What brand / type of battery are you all using?
I was thinking of going Lithium but I keep my bikes on tenders when not in use for more than a week so not sure if it's necessary...
Any recommendations on brand / ampage?

I'm using a Powersonic PTZ7S, which is a sealed lead acid type battery. I've posted some info here about it in case you're interested.

Same exact battery here in 3 bikes. One is several years old and still going strong!!! And best of all, they don't cost much. And double best of all, NO LEAKING ACID :smt023 :smt023

I bounce back and forth (battery swaps): In order of preference

1. YTZ7S from battery mart. Probably the same as the PTZ7S.
2. Radio Shack 5AH alarm battery, but not in the RD400, i go to option #1.

I'm on the 3rd year on a Ballistic 4 cell. Small and light, I've never charged it, just put it in the house for the winter. It was a bit expensive though.

I have mounted one of these under the tank on my 500. But read many horror stories about these batteries. I keep having thoughts of starting that beast up, riding down the road, the battery heating up (under the tank) and catching fire, etc.

Good to hear your success story on the Ballistic RuZty!!!

One caveat in my situation though is...

I WOULD HAVE TO ACTUALLY FINISH THAT BIKE, START IT AND RIDE IT :smt009 . So maybe i don't have nothing to worry about :smt005

Well, I just got a lithium iron battery from China. Skorpion is the brand and it is kind of amazing. It weighs next to nothing and arrived fully charged. So I did what any lazy redneck would do, I installed it and turned the key. The headlight came on, the powervalves cycled and my gps powered up. To ice the cake, the turn signals flashed at a steady rate, without starting the engine. I got it from a company called BatteryStuff. It was $89 US sale price with free shipping. If it lasts it is the way to go. Overheating and explosion are supposedly not an issue. Will update later.
Forgot the model number SSTZ7S-HP. Regular price $115 US, no mention of the length of the sale.
well, it is May, 20 and I haven't had cause to even think about this battery since I installed it.
