rz350 electrical issue

#1 Post by ozwiz » Mon Sep 08, 2014 5:53 am

While riding yesterday my guages were playing up,tacho shot up to 12000,lights went super bright before burning out, temp guage shot up and down.At the moment i have no power going to any brake lights which blew anyway,no power to indicators,no neutral or oil lights, tacho dead now.Initially the 20 amp fuse blew but after replacing it,there's power to headlight and rear tail only.Maybe a current surge? While testing, power was 19 volts in the system,i use a battery eliminator with a small 4 amp battery.I disconnected eliminator to get a good 12volts now.Any chance it has something to do with the eliminator? Has anyone had a similar drama as i might have to replace the harness.Cheers.

sounds like a regulator issue to me, but ive never used an eliminator.

I guess I have to ask the stupid question, why are you using a battery eliminator if you are using a battery?

I'm only running a 4amp battery. The eliminator supplier said it can be used to improve current supply with the battery. The 2 wires from the elimintator connect to the 2 posts on the battery. Not sure but it might have caused a surge and why would the system have 19 volts in it without engine running?

Since you said the 12v returned when you disconnected the eliminator, you have found your problem. Now you can choose to replace the eliminator or install the proper size battery and replace all the bulbs and whatever else was damaged by the high volts.

i would forget that little capacitor and run a battery w/ slightly more AMPs (6A), basically like walt said...you don't need to run exactly OEM. YTZ7S 6A works just fine! I ran a battery that was less amps in my RD and the connector block at the ign. (over time) melted.

I like the YTZ7S 6 AMP AGM maint. free battery from "battery mart" http://www.batterymart.com/p-ytz7s-agm- ... ttery.html $45.95 Free ground shipping. Run this in both the RZ and RD...Stay away from the 5 AH radio shack battery, mine started leaking and not enough amps.

Unless you are getting paid to win races, I like having a solid battery to rely on instead of a small capacitor!!!

There's nothing wrong with the bat elim. in parallel with bat. This was a reg. failure and it will need replacing. It will allow usage of smaller bat. without loosing light brightness while improve bat life.
mere meaningless Coincidence.
