Voltage regulator issue?

#1 Post by ricar » Thu Jul 31, 2014 9:48 pm

Looking at a voltage regulator and I'm seeing a pretty good short. I believe it to be killing the battery, and IMO needs to be replaced, just want to make sure that is the case.

Not my Bike, my 83 is different compared to the 88.

Easiest way to find out is to meter the battery. Start the bike and rev to 5k RPM. Voltage at the battery should be 13.5- 14V. If it's much higher or lower you know the regulator-rectifier is defective.

Same test for all model years.

Not getting the short from the regulator :smt021

Getting the short from the stator he replaced 2 years ago with a brand new OEM. I know you are supposed to get some readings from the stator but now I can't remember what they are.... I took out the original as it was testing bad and sure enough the wires were welded together. This one is not showing a dead short but it seems odd that I'm seeing a reading at the battery terminals when the key is off. I would expect to see infinite so as not to drain the battery. I'll have to check mine and see.

Try reversing the polarity on the meter. But what your measuring is internal resistance of the reg. and that is never infinite, but it shouldn't discharge the batt.
