Fastner help

Post by Juicebox »

How does someone tell what fastner they need based on the part number? I believe that's possible is it not? I have enough stuff to put two bikes together, but no fastners. Also, to build a bike using the red frame below, I would have to buy some parts like a front and rear end and some other small bits. Would I make more money if I bought the parts and built a bike and sold it, or if I just sell the parts I have? Thanks for any help or advice.

Ive no idea about making money on bikes, build them to enjoy them.

some yamaha bolt part numbers do say something like '0630' as part of the number, ie M6 30mm length, but anything a bit special will not have that. run the part number on google and see if parzilla or others like them list the sizes on their pages, that can often work well.

You can potentially make more money selling off parts. That's why there are so many parts out there for sale, and at crazy prices in some cases.
I have been buying parts for the past 5 or 6 years for the restoration of 11 RZ350s. Last year I built my first one. Still not finished. It needs guages, repaint, and attention to detail to get it where I want it.
Like Jon, I'm a fan of saving these bikes, enjoying them, educating the motorcycling public about them. Whatever you do, have fun. Don't make it about money. Restorations get very expensive very quickly. Just enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm not doing this to try and make a bunch of money. But I have way too much stuff and want to eliminate what I dont need. I just thought that since im going to get rid of some stuff, I might as well do what will give me the greatest return...to fund building the black framed bike. Of all the stuff I have, I have none of the nuts and bolts to assemble either one...so I think this is going to be a headache. Thanks again for the help.

I reckon youre better of selling parts, it will take longer but it will net your more money if that is your goal. You could also sell the project as it is, that might excite a few members locally?

You can also use non-OEM bolts for many of the fixings, you only really need the OEMs for stressed parts. Stainless works etc.

This is the chart of bolts for the LC, it will have some common bolts and if you spend the time to get to know the part numbers and the sizes you may have a better clue for the RZ. if you do go thru that exercise, note them down and publish the spreadsheet as no one has done one like this one for the RZ.

An example of a Partzilla / boats.net run down of info on items and their pics:

98580-06575

http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamah ... 75-00.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and sometimes they list sizes for things:

90201-06042

http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamah ... 42-00.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And i quote 'WASHER (6.5-18-0.6)'

Great idea Jon...I never thought of documenting this so somebody else in the same boat could use the info. That's got me thinking a little more positively now Thanks for the advice.

All the oem nuts and bolts get real expensive in a hurry and if you use hardware store stuff, it will be the first thing someone points out on your "restoration" bike. I am bringing a bike back from the grave and it came with zero hardware and it is a pain in arse. Just a thought. If you want to make money to fund the other projects you have, part it out. That's how I fund a lot of my projects. That way your bike gets done and the parts you don't need go to other bikes so they can get done too. Keep some spare parts for future use.

Very difficult to estimate whether you are better off selling parts or building the bike. Need to know what parts you want, and need to know the quality of your build when completed.

I've had a lot of experience with replacing hardware on RZs and other bikes. My advice is- use only OEM hardware.

If you know that an OEM bolt is fully threaded, it's not a problem to replace with a non-OEM bolt. If there is any shank on the OEM bolt, the replacement bolt needs the same shaft length. Sometimes, the shaft works as a stop, and sometimes the shaft is captured on the nut side (engine mounting bolts, etc.). Many people ignore this and only look at the thread diameter and length. Also, a lot of motorcycle hardware is lightened (dished heads, gun-drilling, etc.)- even RZ hardware from 1985.
