TZR250 2ME

Post by evan_calgary »

Had wanted one of the 250 GP replica bikes for some time. Would have preferred one of the later model years but they can only be had by import here. Happened upon a TZR250 2ME with a broken set of cases from a piston explosion. I have a before and after picture here. Not all quite finished. The tank ended up with a matte finish so it has been resprayed. Still need a couple bits and such like pipe hangers in place.

Full engine rebuild including new cases (Thanks Rob!), barrels from japan.
Unknown make pipes with carbon/kevlar silencers (Thanks to another forum member here)
Lower fairings brought in from Japan.

Still need to pick up my pods and get a battery but almost there!

Very nice work Evan! A friend from FL has one and it puts out around 60HP. He said it is a great handler too.

Wonderful bike Evan! Glad to see those cases that I had kicking around for about 3 years came in handy. I still have the rest of the parts but there is one guy in line ahead of you. I will let you know.

I wish I could find one of those down east! I have never even seen one on the road down here!

First one I ever saw for sale and wasn't listed. Well taken care of bike that apparently exploded while in the garage. There was nothing left of the piston and a piece of piston went through the bottom case. Nothing had to be done to the controls and such.

60 sounds quite optimistic from what I have heard. If I can get the stock 45 I would be happy. Very curious to ride it.

Would still be interested in those bits redline.

You would get 45hp out of a stock 250cc single cyl MX engine. You should be putting down better than 55+hp.

50hp is the book number. Optimistic and I am at elevation. Performance expectations are well documented over on 2 stroke spirit.

45hp is a MODERN 2-stroke 250. 92 Cr500 was only 56.

Anywho, here to showcase my bike, not your opinions on what a twin 'should' do.

Evan'sWard, has your buddy ridden a RZ? Would be curious to hear what it is like in comparison.

Have yet to ride this and suspect it will need some tuning given pods and pipes. While to wait unfortunately. Will put up some more pics once it is all finished.

I remember I had a old issue of Cycle World or something and they had a ride review of the TZR. Apparently, its going to handle like its wired into your central nervous system. So I'm guessing its still pretty damn good by today's standards..

And both my CRs dyno'd out over 60, but I'm probably at a much lower elevation than you.

I am hopeful the handling is quite good. Have ridden many RZs and this is down 100cc's so curious how the power will be.

Am still yet to ride a CR500. 60 horse in a dirt bike must be fun!

The exhausts have been matched to the pipes which was a large increase at the outlet diameter. Tuning theory suggests this is a good idea but it may impact the low to mid range. The actual port was not modified. Exhaust velocity is possibly impacted at the barrel exit.

Looks great, I have only seen a couple of those on the roads over the years, probably about as many as I have seen 500 Gammas. Some nice stuff in your garage.

Should be on par with same era Gamma. I think they top out at around 90mph.
60hp on dirt is a whole new adventure! This may be a big engine, but it revs as fast as a 125!
