R6 rear spring too soft which replacement?

#1 Post by Marrcel » Sun Apr 14, 2019 5:08 pm

On the track of Zandvoort my exhausts scrapped the asfalt. [emoji36] 31k rd350 ypvs 1983.
Stock swinger with 17” wheel.
R6 ‘00 shock. Comp 1 click open. Rebound 15 click open. Preload maximum.
A stiffer spring is an option. But another 2nd hand shock probable cheaper and better. Which shock has the same dimensions and has a stiffer spring?

Hi Marrcel,

Those shocks can be had for very very cheap (at least on US/Can) side. Try and find a lower mile one.

There is also lots of discussion on the board as to whether the R6 shock is the 'right' choice based on the linkage leverage. There was another option out there that was stiffer or softer. If stiffer it may work better for your track bike!

Thank you for info. I just found a younger r6 shock and ordered longer tierods to give it one inch more ride height. Fingers crossed.

Won't longer arms lower the ride height?

Dont get me started...lil :smt044

Do what your going to do, then race it.
That's all you can do when experimenting, with parts built and designed for a 100% completely different machine, with completely different geometry.

Read this: https://www.computrackboston.com/The-Sh ... s/4549.htm

Really, Don't wanna rain on anyone's parade, but if your racing a bike, and you have sanction fees, entry fees, $2000.00 dollars in safety equipment, transport, prep, raceday & practice tire budget...why....try to cut corners on the single most important thing for a track bike? Your suspension.

Your engine condition, power output, rider ability etc..mean absolutely nothing, without proper suspension and set up. If you don't have a budget for a proper shock, realistically you shouldn't be going racing or track days. You don't have to respond ....I get it...we've all done similar things in the quest to save a dollar..

Just trying to help.

It's all good, but try looking at 2 stroke gathering or track days or racing org websites.
Last year I picked up 2 Fox twin clicker shocks 1 w adj ride height, for only $225.00 at the 2 stroke extravaganza.
I also scored a Brand New Wilbers Suzuki RG 500 shock , right here in this forum for 1/4 the price of new.
It's often easier , than fitting a square into a circle.
Many seem to think the shock swaps work well on RZs.....I've never viewed one that's better for even equal to a dedicated replacement shock.
Only two I've viewed everything was reengineered w upper lower mounts along with front end swaps, to give optimum or desired rake/trail and sag settings.
You certainly don't gave to spend much $$$ when looking for deals,
But like I said in my 1st post...it's all good, I understand we've all tried things on the cheap.....but that's my lesson learned, and I try to help others from my mistakes.

Anyways best of luck, and have fun!!!
