Yes im hearing you....hate to cut any oem stuff but in this case its worth the sacrifice lol. Besides you dont see it from the side so its all good.

I didn't cut anything but the shock mount
simply elongated the holes in chain guard to move it down and back a bit
and just let reservoir press against inner fender plastic
I like the R6 shock because of the extra length
but CBR shock is same length as RZ and just as tunable and no cutting just gotta mount the reservoir

You can still buy new OEM chain guards, so less of an issue than normal RZ plastic :)

So if I already have the R6 rear shock conversion can I upgrade to newer model without any additional mods? Conversion was done by previous owner. My only concern is the lifespan of the R6 shock on mine.

which 'newer model'??? sure you can fit an F2 shock in an earlier bike, but if you mean R6, then most likely not as the shape isnt the same.

Posted elsewhere on here is the fitment of a new R1 shock. I was considering giving it a go but I got my finger out and finished the RGV conversion instead. I think you could start with the stock shock and not shorten it as the OP did if you already have an R6 shock installed, or at least confirm they are the same length first.

I got a chain guard off this guy. Great craftsmanship, at the same price as a plastic one.
Along with the turn signals the oem chain guard was hard to look at. This one could be powder coated black if you don't want the bling look.

the problem is usually the dimensions and placing of the reservoir, if you can fit it then you could try it. the best upgrade is along the lines of YSS, nitron, ohlins etc. the ones designed for the RZ. the R6 stuff was a cheap alternative for a better shock with more adjustment, for some it is magic, for others its not.

Based on his measurements I don't think you need to shorten the shock by welding, the '02 R6 shock I used years ago was about 308mm long and works well for me. For reference I'm 6'1" and a little over 200 lbs. The most notable feature here is the reservoir and adjusters sitting a bit lower so it won't require frame cutting.
