Balancing a 4LO crank

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Sun Oct 28, 2018 9:10 pm

Heard that Mongoose Machining in Vancouver Canada can do the a/n'd - is there anyone else in Canada that is reputable? I know that are good machine shops States side but the exchange is a killer currently. Also can a 4LO crank be welded or is that an RZ thing. I know a RZ crank is better but have budgeted for other 4LO bits for a build.

Went to the CVtech website for rebuilds and only and years 1981-1982 are not on the list unfortunately unless the RD400 is the same crank - don't believe so.

Okotoks, Alberta. Joe Hasloh at RPM has gone over a number of my LC and RZ cranks. I have had zero issues with them and they ran well. Good guy and less distance shipping. 403-995-9583. Those crank pins can also be welded from what I remember. One of my prior cranks had come apart slightly and it was fixed and welded.

Erm ... speaking from personally experienced unpleasantness:
Don't give over ...Anything... you care about to the Bunglers at Mongoose.

Bare is there someone in BC other than Mongoose or do I head east to Alberta? I thought there would be someone in the LMD or the Island that could be trusted to do a decent job.

I send to SCR racing in Los Angeles... and take the shippings as part of the cost of not having wrecked parts
Apparently there are a couple of lower mainland people who do Fine work.
Frankly I haven't used / don't know them.
Try asking at Cypress moto service in Delta. They are up on decent /capable machinists

I have two cranks rebuilt by CVTech. They seem fine to me.

I don't know how the 81-82 LC crank is or is not different from earlier or later models but CVTech rebuilt two LC cranks for me so they clearly can do it.

Mine weren't welded. Price was ca $600 for full rebuild. Seems you can't get a crank for much less these days.

At a $600 rebuild cost you need to start considering a new crank as an easier option https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Yamaha-RD-350-L ... :0&vxp=mtr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thats $640 cdn plus $100 shipping plus GST & duties and that ends up being quite a lot more money, closer to $800 cdn. IIRC I only paid around $600 back to my door. It was a while back so I don't remember exact numbers but it wasn't that much over $600.

I'm assuming the rebuild included balancing for approximately $600 CND.

The problem with rebuilding 35 year old cranks is your builder may find surprises. For example, if your rebuilder finds a damaged web you may be into it for a lot more than $600. If new is available for a comparable cost, it is an option worth considering. Saving a little money can often cost you a lot more.
