Instant Gasket

#1 Post by Hudtm60 » Mon Nov 23, 2015 8:33 pm

Hello Everyone,

I'm new here...gradually cleaning up an '81 4L0. I ordered two pairs of the 'O shaped' metal exhaust gasket but forgot to get the thin oval shaped fibre ones...so yes...thinking of resorting using the old ones with the support of some instant gasket along with the old ones. I haven't used that stuff for years- it was never a good sign.

Anyone have any recommendations of a good brand? YAMBITS in UK sells Hylomar but not sure if you can get it over here.

Advice gratefully received.

Thanks,

C

Just make them out of gasket paper.

Yep what Rory said, gasket paper is awesome, I made a one piece base gasket for the LC I just built. Exhaust flange gaskets will be fairly easy, but you will need a thick gasket paper, or just double up with a smear of (copper based gasket sealer) between two.

Any copper based high temp gasket goo is good for the exhaust side of things.

Three Bond White and nothing else for engine case splits, and occasionally I will use it for base gasket (see up) and I even lightly smeared a copper head gasket with three bond white and its holding up nicely.

Ordered the Threebond 120 and next stop is wherever sells gasket paper....I think I remember how to make them....in the old days it was careful use of the hammer with a Corn Flakes box....they were thicker then

Lol, Yep, That brings back memories.. :)

I used to smear a little old oil on the part, easier to see the black oil... press the corn flakes box on and it would imprint the part onto the box and cut it out with a scissors or tap the edges with a hammer.. :)

funny...oil wd be a good idea...I remember I got too cocky and tried the cornflakes box on a cylinder head gasket for a CB125. result....I just remember my heart dropping to the sound of very rapid farting....looking back in those days it seemed it was a matter of life or death whether we got our bikes running or not with all manner of wings on a prayer ideas.....nowadays it's just go back into the house get online and throwdown for the proper part...then put our feet up...a wait a week
