gas tank needed

#1 Post by ststrider » Sat Aug 29, 2015 9:37 am

I am in need of a tank for an rdlc mine is badly rusted and i am getting tired of painting it up only to have it blister the paint with a new pinhole a year later. There is a guy on ebay offering made in india tanks but i have heard nothing about the quality of these. Anyone have any insight into these aftermarket tanks or know of a solid rdlc tank for sale.

the guys on the UK forum have nothing but bad reviews about the India LC tanks .
which is a shame because a aluminium replacement would be great.
good luck mark

Im always amazed when newbies say theyve never read anything about the quality of these Indian tanks, its all over the RD/RZ forums as to how bad they are :/

this is the only rd/rz forum i go on and i have yet to find any report that involves first hand experience. i am always a little skeptical of opinions on the internet.but i do have to agree it sounds as if the fit and finish may be far below what the price point may suggest.

These tanks were made with such thin gauge steel that it's no wonder many resemble a sieve now :smt010
If the rust is only on the bottom corners then maybe a solder repair and then use POR 15 tank sealer

my one tank had a liner which had to be removed as it was coming apart now i have pinholes blistering my new paint job all over . i am not sure it is worth trying to save it. that is the only reason i would consider the indian tanks . my other tank well i soldered up three bad spots and painted it for the third time who knows the last time it took a year for it to blister the paint. if these bikes were not so much damn fun to ride i would have flogged it by now, but these two strokes are so addictive.

I have lined 5 tanks in as many years.
The first tank I did failed after a year, that may have been the product or the operator.
The last 4 tanks I have lined with KBS gold
Set aside half the day to properly do the job.
You will need a hairdryer for the in-between drying stage.
Done correctly KBS gold will work.

could a person with a trash tank cut the bottom out and make a former to mold the sheet ali to.
i know very little about the dark art of sheet metal forming.
how would you build the former?. my guess would be a basic shape out of wood and and then bondo to final shape.(one for the top and one for the base)
i have a donor tank and will have a go at this if i can get a reasonable plan .
i know an excellent welder .
what thickness ali sheet do you think? 1/16 ?
i think the knee cutouts would be made separately then welded in.

a winter project for when its cooler in the garage i think, roll on november.

Not understanding.
I have 2 LC tanks that are Structurally Pristine (both have Bikes attached :-)
Odd to me some have tanks that resemble Collanders. I've never seen one.

LOL you are the exception that proves the rule bare, but we knew that :smt002 :smt003

Someone could use the bottom half of the one I cut up as a mould if they liked, but the top half was a bit too battered so doesnt have the shape you want lol

There were a few Fibreglass tanks being sold in Oz for rd250/350lc's a while back.
Also there were tanks being offered made in the UK for about 370 pounds a few years back.
Legend m/c had them on eBay.
Every second lc owner has or will have tank problems so if somebody comes up with a decent replacement
there will be a market for them!

Legend found there was no market for their tanks and discounted to move em on...

FYI In some places GRP tanks are not legal for road use, I expect Aus is in that list LOL

I found (like Dan @ Legend) when I thought about doing this that everyone wants one, but no one will actually pay what they cost. Even when you know the cost of a tank, repair, liner, paint, decals it seems people still dont see the value in paying it all up front for a new one. I cant fathom it, but it happens everytime. I hope one day someone proves me wrong... and yes... I dare ya! :)
