0-Rings on bearings vs pins on Bearings
Machine shop that rebuilt my crankshaft claims the O-rings are the better option 100%. I sent the crankshaft back to them because they rebuilt it non-oem. Now he's telling me I'd be better off leaving the O-rings and if I do decide to have the bearings replaced its going to be an extra $200+
They claim that they rebuild their banchee crankshafts with O-rings only and they are more durable and safer for the crankcases.
cheers

do you have any personal experience with these type of O-rings?mkane wrote:Run with it.

The problem with the pins is that they don't always line up perfectly with the cutouts in the engine cases. (after a crankshaft rebuild)
The O-rings don't have that problem obviously.
I have never used the oring setup but I have never seen anyone post problems with it.
I would go with it.
Did you use CV-Tech?

Its happened the pins don't line up?
I'm really out of sorts here :( I had my friend pull out the crankshaft after reading on a forum the O-rings were so-so. He wasn't happy about it but agreed with me that it should had been OEM. Might have to wear body armor if I bring it back with the O-rings.....

It seems that a lot of the tz boys would pull a crank to bits and replace the oem pinned bearings with bearings like what you have been supplied.
Their reasoning was, when a main bearing seized it did not tear the crankcases to bits.
I would happily run with o ring'd bearings.

O rings with some bearing retainer.

Re: 0-Rings on bearings vs pins on Bearings
CV-tech did the job. My only gripe with them is they installed the O-rings without contacting me first. Since I asked to rebuild the crankshaft that was an OEM Yamaha part I was surprised to see the O-rings instead of the pins. Not knowing much either way I took my brothers advice (he raced rd's in the 70-80's) and sent back the crankshaft to add bearings with pins. Its coming back instead with new O-rings after I had a long discussion with mike at cv-tech. This is such a learning experience and I'm finding this very frustrating (this restoration) when you don't do your homework first......2smoke wrote:The problem with the pins is that they don't always line up perfectly with the cutouts in the engine cases. I used CV-Tech before, they are good. Shipping from where I live is really expensive unfortunately.
They will do whatever you want, but they rely on you to supply the parts. If you don't supply the parts, they will do it their way.
Seriously, you are over-thinking it. The O-rings will be fine.
No worries. Use Yamaha OEM seals.
